| Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00  | 'WOW' ads removed By CAREN HALBFINGER THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: Aug. 17, 2001) westchester - Westchester County stripped 40 ads off the backs of its Bee-Line buses after county officials learned they urged women to bare their breasts. The four-foot-by-three-foot ads — dominated by the word "WOW,'' an acronym for "Whip 'em Out Wednesday'' — are a promotion for "The Opie and Anthony Show,'' which airs daily on WNEW (102.7 FM). Listeners slap "WOW'' bumper stickers to their cars and trucks, hoping women will flash their breasts as they drive by. Ellen Flaherty of Yorktown Heights complained about the bus ads via e-mail Aug. 3, according to county spokeswoman Donna Greene. She said she was raising two pre-teenage daughters and didn't believe female taxpayers should be encouraged to "whip out" their breasts. A second woman also complained, but county officials couldn't locate her e-mail yesterday. The complaints were forwarded to county Transportation Commissioner Lawrence Salley, who had never heard the radio show and had no idea what Flaherty meant. He asked around and found a young male staffer who explained the "WOW'' phenomenon. "Once I checked into it and found out what it meant, I pulled the ads,'' Salley said. "We found it offensive. I thought it was certainly exploitative of women and that's not something that the county will condone.'' The ads were history by Aug. 8. Even without the controversy, they were due to be replaced Aug. 21. Salley tuned in, for curiosity's sake, and then tuned out the shock jocks. "I was not impressed,'' said Salley, who favors jazz stations such as WBGO (88.3). "I think it's shock radio and rather juvenile.'' Salley said the county rejects ads for guns, liquor and cigarettes, along with ads that are political or sexually explicit. These are the first bus ads to be pulled since the county first started posting them last year. The county won't lose any money by doing so, Salley said. It has a $6.5 million, 3-year advertising contract with Viacom Outdoor. The producer of the radio program could not be reached immediately. Salley said the county had received only one other complaint about an ad. It was an advertisement for the History Channel that had pictures of the founding fathers, along with phrases not found in most children's history books. An image of Ben Franklin, for instance, was accompanied by the word "womanizer.'' "Of course, we didn't pull that ad,'' Salley said. How the hell does that make any sense? WOW is not an offensive ad, it is merely a suggestion. NO kid would even know what WOW meant if they did not listen to the show, while everyone could see Ben Franklin and see womanizer written uner his picture.
