Raunchy duo takes over WYSP p.m. drive time

By Michael Klein
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

In a radio shake-up with national overtones, WYSP-FM (94.1) this afternoon brings in the raunchy talk duo Opie & Anthony for the 3-to-7 p.m. time slot.

Couzin Ed's music show moves from afternoon drive to middays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The odd man out will be hometown radio icon John DeBella, who yesterday left the station.

WYSP, which also airs Howard Stern from 6 to 10 a.m., is dipping more deeply into the lucrative format of testosterone-heavy syndicated talk radio.

WYSP and the O&A and Stern shows are owned by Infinity Broadcasting.

O&A - Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia - originates at WNEW-FM in New York, where the show is top among young male listeners, who count on an unabashedly politically incorrect blue streak.

"There are only a handful of radio shows that are this good and can generate this kind of ratings," Ken Stevens, vice president and general manager of WNEW and WYSP, said.

He said the decision to bring O&A to Philadelphia was driven by ratings. Stern's show on WYSP is routinely number one in Philadelphia, but the station seldom keeps as many listeners for the rest of the day.

Talk formats such as Stern's and O&A's tend to be more profitable than music because they allow for more commercials per hour. Syndicated shows also ultimately can be cheaper to produce. Nineteen Infinity stations will carry O&A, Stevens said.

WYSP, which in 1986 was the first station outside of New York to pick up Stern's show, also is the first to pick up O&A.

There has been no love lost between O&A and Stern. After O&A began in New York two years ago, Stern insisted to Infinity that the duo not mention Stern on the air.

As part of a three-year contract signed this week between O&A and Infinity, O&A may mention Stern.

Viewers of NBC's Today show got a sample of O&A's humor last summer when a woman in Rockefeller Center bared her breasts on camera; she won a $1,000 bounty from O&A as part of its "Whip It Out Wednesday" public-exposure stunt.

DeBella, who ruled the mornings nearly 20 years ago on WMMR-FM, yesterday said by e-mail: "I've had a great run at WYSP. I believe in radio and I believe it needs to keep growing. Unfortunately, I found the medium as well as myself stagnating. My desire was to be able to create and contribute. The frustration of not being able to do so has led WYSP and me to part ways.

"Fortunately, it is summer and my family and I will be able to live off of the vegetables we grow in our garden."

NY twosome replacing DeBella

Local DJ John DeBella is out at WYSP-FM as of today, radio sources told Tattle yesterday. He'll be replaced by New York-based duo Opie and Anthony, who broadcast out of WYSP's sister station, WNEW-FM. Philadelphia will be O and A's first foray into national syndication, insiders said.

"WYSP didn't renew [DeBella's] contract. It's not a firing," a source said. "WYSP had to make room for Opie and Anthony, and WYSP hopes John stays with the company."

Infinity Broadcasting owns WYSP and WNEW.

Opie and Anthony signed a contract this week with Infinity and WNEW, reportedly worth $30 million, the New York Post reported. Part of the deal, radio insiders say, includes a nationwide syndication deal that will pipe them into 22 markets. *

Will anyone ever get it right? It's "Whip 'EM Out Wednesday", not "it". "It" would make it a gay promotion, and I doubt the preponderance of the Opie and Anthony audience wants to see "it".

Dan thanks for the cut & paste job. At least then mentioned O&A, unlike usual news about them.

I went to college in Philly and fondly remember taping O+A when at home and bringing it back to school to give people a sample of what we had here in NY..I'm glad that the people of philly can now hear the show and join in the insanity..All this talk of Philly makes me crave a Yuengling Lager and a Geno's cheesesteak

I wonder if any of the reporters have actually heard O&A. It's always "raunchy" or "foul mouthed" in articles. How about funny or clever?

I think the funnier line is from the Daily News story: "Philadelphia will be O and A's first foray into national syndication, insiders said."

Who the F is the "insider"? MY sources say it's Drudge Jr.!

Is it not generally common knowledge that this would be their first foray into syndication?
