Rush Limbaugh's new Alex Rodriguez-size contract reflects both his own success and the betting by radio's biggest corporate owners that national stars are a central pillar on which they should be building.

Limbaugh's deal, eight years for an estimated $250 million plus a $35 million bonus, follows big new deals for Howard Stern and Don Imus. Equally telling was an eight-figure syndication contract for WNEW afternoon team Opie and Anthony — who have done well in New York, but are a gamble in most other cities.

Stern, Imus and Opie and Anthony are signed to Infinity, one of radio's two giants. Limbaugh was signed by the other one, Clear Channel, through its Premiere subsidiary, which also has Dr. Laura, Art Bell and others.

Infinity is courting Chicago's Mancow Muller, and both companies scout constantly for the next big thing.

In a sense, this brings radio back to the golden age of the '30s and '40s, when it had national news and entertainment personalities the way television does today. It was after TV muscled in that radio shifted to a more local focus — which was logical, since most of its owners were local.

Now, however, Clear Channel owns about 1,200 stations and Infinity about 200. In New York, they own 11 stations that control 60% of radio ad revenue. So their reach and financial muscle make it much more tempting and feasible to own programs that can be carried in many markets.

The economics are pretty basic. If Rush is on 600 stations, his new pay breaks down to about $50,000 per station per year. But that's 599 other salaries that don't have to be paid, and more important, what are the odds those 600 stations could find someone with Rush's ratings and advertiser appeal for anywhere near that price?

No, syndication tends to be cost-effective even when the star gets big bucks, which is why it's hot. WBLS and WRKS, for instance, both carry syndicated morning shows, Doug Banks and Tom Joyner.

Many listeners still argue that national shows, even good ones, make radio less local and thus less interesting. But until any such sentiment shows up in the ratings, the trend is likely to continue.

ROFL! Mancow and next best thing in the same sentence!

Dad: Where do you get your values? From that stinking heavy metal music you listen to day and night?
Joe: Yeah, that's it, man. It's all the music! You know everything is just fine until we just listen to a couple of heavy metal albums. Then we get all fucked up!

I read article too; I can't imagine Mancow syndicated on Infinity. Didn't they learn when they tried to syndicate Greaseman and Lykis to NY?

Haha, well the best part of the Rush Limbaugh deal is reported in the Drudge Report today. It looks like Mel pissed in Howard Stern's cheerios!

Funny, I thought Howard Stern fashioned himself as some sort of libertarian? The last I checked, a libertarian and free market capitalist would say "You deserve whatever you can get from your employer."

The fact remains that Rush Limbaugh makes WAY more money for Infinity than Howard does, and THAT is why he "deserves" what he got. How funny is it that Mel chimed in though?

Sure, it's a little bit of a slap in the face to Howard, and to a lesser degree O&A, but I think it's good for the boys in the long run because this deal and Stern's means that as ratings and markets increase so do their income. NICE!

Contrary to what Howard Stern would have folks believe, he did not invent talk radio. Limbaugh is mostly heard on AM stations and it is basically a traditional talk radio format. He does "bits" but you can't say that he does things with lesbians and the crippled and the like. But Howie makes the link. I wonder how he will revise history to come up with why he was using the term "balloon knot" this morning? Hmm...

MEL KARMAZIN: I WOULD HAVE PAID RUSH LIMBAUGH $500 MILLION; HOWARD STERN LASHES OUT

**Update**

CBSINFINITY head Mel Karmazin now says he would have doubled-down on a record-breaking radio contract sealed between Rush Limbaugh and CLEARCHANNELPREMIERE -- a deal valued at more than $250 million!

"If he called me and he wanted to work for us, we would have paid him double," Karmazin said late Tuesday.

As first revealed by the DRUDGE REPORT, Limbaugh's new eight year contract smashes all radio records; topping Walter Winchell, Paul Harvey and Howard Stern, who recently signed a multi-year extension with Karmazin, valued at an estimated $100 million.

Runner up Stern lashed out at the historic Limbaugh deal on air this week.

MORE

"I wouldn't mind it if he deserved it," said Stern. "He was a Top 40 DJ who got kicked out because he was so bad. Then he went to the Kansas City Royals for about 25 grand. And that wasn't that long ago."

Limbaugh's earnings now pace him ahead of the annual salaries for Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Barbara Walters -- combined!

The deal represents a stunning triumph over the establishment by an outsider who connected with and captured the spirit of the nation’s heartland.

Limbaugh is expected to comment on his new deal when he returns to the microphone on Thursday.
