Asbury Park City Officials Consider Pressing Charges Against the Club After a Recent Event.

Club Owner Calls the Charges "Politically Motivated" and Asks Fans to Call and Write Letters of Support.

On July 7th, The Stone Pony hosted the "Opie & Anthony Road Show", hosted by radio station WNEW 102.7. According to Asbury Park City Police Director Michael W. Dowling, as reported in the Asbury Park Press, the hosts of the show encouraged women to remove their clothing, engage in nude wrestling and perform sex acts in a plastic pool. Photos of the event were later posted in the WNEW web site.

Because of these actions, city officials are considering pressing charges against the club for violating state law that prohibits nudity in places serving alcoholic beverages. City councilmember Kate Mellina was very critical of the event, claiming that "Asbury Park doesn't need this type of image." Police Director Dowling was quoted as stating that "He (Stone Pony owner Domenic Santana) promised nothing would happen and it did."

Fifty-seven security guards, including fifteen Asbury Park police officers - required by the city before granting approval for the show - were present on the afternoon of the event.

Said Mr. Santana, "There is no way I would condone such behavior. I have too much at stake to allow something like this to happen." He also claims that the investigation is in response to criticism that he leveled during a recent city council meeting against Dowling's handling of a recent "Greekfest".

Greekfest is an annual event held most recently on Sunday, July 15. Four people were left injured by gun shots, and others were the victims of robbery or carjacking, in the aftermath of that event.

In an e-mail to club supporters, Mr. Santana released the following statement: "The Stone Pony has always been known for their community-minded stance. Sometimes this meant that we had to express our unpopular opinions. That has not gone over too well with some self-serving city officials who are trying to use The Stone Pony as a political pawn to gain office. The witch hunt has been going on for quite a while, but has escalated after a recent WNEW-sponsored Opie & Anthony event. Rather than shut our doors and go away, we are asking for you, our friends and supporters, to mail the Asbury Park city council members and tell them of your positive experiences here at The Stone Pony. We appreciate all of your help and need a strong show of support to help us in our endeavor."

Ever since the club reopened it's doors on Memorial Day 2000, an event attended by then New Jersey Governor Christie Todd Whitman and city officials, the club has been proud of it's community efforts, as well as projects with charities and local causes. The club has been involved with events involving World Hunger Year, UNICEF and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, as well as special events for local heroes such as a benefit supporting the family of a Passaic firefighter who died in the line of duty.

These events have not only benefited these worthy causes, but have brought a positive image to the city of Asbury Park. Fans around the United States, and around the world, know Asbury Park and the State of New Jersey because of the venue's reputation and it's storied place in the history of rock music since it first opened it's doors in 1974.

The Pony believes that it's time for city officials in Asbury Park to be reminded of the club's position in enhancing the image of the city, and that it deserves - though has never asked for - credit for the good work and the positive image that it has created for the area.

Therefore, fans and patrons of the venue from around the world are being asked to please call or write to the city officials listed below and let them know your impressions about the club, the wonderful events that have been held there and what the venue means to you and the city of Asbury Park.

Well, the police were right there the entire time, and I'm sure they were well aware of what was transpiring in there. If laws were being broken, they sure as hell weren't letting on about it.

Pending directives from Opie and/or Anthony, and Froy (on behalf of the Board), please, Please, PLEASE, don’t anyone represent themselves as a spokesperson of the Show on behalf of the show or in any capacity on behalf of this Board.

As I’ve stated in the past, use your heads and DON’T use your @opieanthony.com address.

If this becomes a policy issue with the Show, the Boys will let us know later.

This does not sound to me like a "call" for the O&A Army. So, go on people, move on, nothing to see here.

I agree that the cops there should have done something if laws were being broken. Its a shame that things always come to this, but the world is just too damn PC these days.

Nothing to see here - move along. And by the way, OJ did it.

While this is not a board or O&A sanctioned directive, order, etc... I do think that we should get behind The Stone Pony AS INDIVIDUALS, not representing anyone but ourselves in appreciation for the venue having the event. The Stone Pony is a New Jersey icon and should be given its due.

I agree with the prior posts saying that this should not be thought of as a oa.com or O&A army orders but I still think its important that people make themselves heard.

EDIT: After hearing what the owner has to say, I say F em. He's gonna sue WNEW now for breach of contract. He's a moron, he knew what to expect and he's gonna stab them in the back. Screw em.

He is not going to sue NEW. Even if he files, it will be put on the back burner and "settled" out of court. O and A know this.

He is just trying to save face by coming off as an upstanding business owner who didn't expect to have this stuff that got complained about.

I like Domenic, but he knew exactly what an O and A roadshow entails, especially the part about selling so much beer you run out. and certainly the lewd debauchery that we all enjoy.

And I saw him in the middle of the action, rather than in his office, which he claims.

If he is worrying about getting closed down because of this, the council in AP (I live nearby) should recall that that place is the only reason for straight people to go to that part of town.

this was posted over the weekend by O&Aswallow i will say the same thing again.

NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER, POST A MESSAGE LIKE THIS EVER.

unless you go to a mod, or froy which would be best and get approva first.

Did you ever stop to think maybe and i mean maybe since O&A dont care enough. But what if O&A and the wnew legal dept are already handling this. Then a few hundred morons send hate mail and fuck everything up, what will happen then?

If they needed our help they woulda asked for it. Otherwise stop trying to be good samaritans.

The laws being what they are in NJ, this guy will probably get a fine and a slap on the wrist. I am quite sure he made nicely off of the event to cover a small fine.

Anyway, do NJ laws apply in Bierut??

Do you really think they'll close the last business in Asbury Park?

Peace be with you all...and also with you O&A!

I NEVER asked anyone to write or call and I certainly didn't post that e-mail as a call to the "O&A Army." I posted the e-mail to share with you guys so you could see what The Stone Pony was up to, following the roadshow.
