Stern Slips to 3rd By DAVID HINCKLEY Daily News Staff Writer Howard Stern of WXRK slipped to third among New York's morning radio shows this summer, something that hadn't happened since before the first George Bush administration. That was one of two surprises in the July-September Arbitron ratings released yesterday. In the overall ratings, WQHT (97.1 FM) — perhaps helped by the controversy over the suspension of morning show host Star — leapfrogged over perennial winner WLTW (106.7 FM) to finish No. 1. The King of All Media is seeing a little rust on his scepter these days. Stern trailed both WINS (1010 AM), which like other news stations saw a huge surge in listenership after Sept. 11, and WSKQ (97.9 FM, La Mega). La Mega's morning show, "El Vacilon de la Manana," with Luis Gonzalez and Moonshadow, had been nipping at Stern's heels for years and was ecstatic yesterday over finally finishing ahead of him in a ratings quarter. Stern went to No. 1 in New York soon after he took over the morning show on WXRK (92.3 FM) in 1986. In the handful of ratings periods where he hasn't finished No. 1 since then, he has been beaten only by WINS in quarters when there was unusually heavy news-radio listenership. The most recent time that happened was last winter, when WINS finished ahead of him by one-tenth of a point. But Stern's ratings generally have declined over the last year, though his remains the single biggest show in the city. In the late '90s he averaged more than 8% of the total audience that was listening to the radio in an average quarter-hour. As recently as last summer, he was getting 7.8% of the audience. This summer he averaged 6.4%, which was actually up a tick from the 6.3% he averaged in the spring. WINS averaged 7.4% of the audience this summer and WSKQ averaged 6.6%. In the overall ratings, WQHT averaged 6.6% of the audience to 6% for WLTW. But WLTW maintained a substantial lead over everyone else among listeners 25 to 54, who are the most important for the stations because they're the ones advertiser pay the biggest money to reach.   <---- Kiss me helmet. | ||||

He only started using the 25, and that's 25 to 54 crutch in the cities he said he would be #1 overall and fell short. He always claimed he would beat the all news stations and powerhouses of every city. And he doesn't win 25 to 54 in every city either. It seemed like he would be #1 everywhere for a while there, but he's lost the edge, moreover, his SHOW has. Howard is still the single funniest motherfucker on the air, but his show isn't anymore. He can't do it himself. | ||||

| Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 01 | O&A are awesome but they were 4th in NY and sfter siging a big contract Mel will not be happy with that. he reason that the talk shows slipped this ratings period was 9/11/01 and now with anthrax everyone is listening to the news as they should in some cases. The spanish station topped stern because stern's listeners are smart enough to realize that they need to hear the news in a time like this(post 9/11). I'm sure it was a shock to see O&A in 4th but hey at a time like this ratings just do not seem that important. I'm kind of dissapointed O&A did not be more like Howard and try to raise some money for the victims. If they feel their fans are so loyal they should have tried to help by asking them to part with some cash for a good cause. | ||||

The MAIN point was that he doesn't say "25 to 54" He says, "I'm number one" Pretty slick, but pussy. He used to claim to beat EVERYONE. Now it's 25 to 54, then 25 to 54 males, what's next. In the past it was #1, PERIOD! He sidesteps this issue, just like he sidesteps the boys. Call him up and tell him to mention O&A. He won't. You'll stay on hold forever. I think they're big enough now for him to to put the "Why should I make them famous?" excuse to bed. Wake up dude, it's a pretty good feeling. P.S. Ken, I think even your PEN knows that off the top of his head, Howard is WAY funnier than Anthony. Anthony's impressions are fantastic, but just talking, being funny, nobody beats Howard. Now, get over it, move on. Stern may be No. 1, but that's only in your mind and Howard's. The ratings have proven that Stern is bullshitting you. Stern was No. 1 overall for quite a while, but now that Howard is not putting effort in his show, and is only going through the motions, is a sign that he is only doing this for himself. Now, get over it, just because there are other shows to listen to, doesn't mean that Howard and his millions of brainwashed fans should cry like little babies, throw temper tantrums, and go beat people up because they don't like or listen to Hoawrd, ok? That's life, now grow up, get your thumb out of your mouth, and move on. This is the O&A baord, and this board is under dictatoriship. Your opinion is shit just like the rest of ours. I still give him props in the areas he deserves it, but if I say one bad thing about him, they pounce all over me. Even if what I say is true. If Howard was number one everywhere, It would make me happy, but false statements make me mad. Lately, besides his natural wit and interesting view on many subjects, HE makes me mad. Between the constant, endless commercials, his ducking of the boys, and him seemingly going through the motions, I've pretty much arrived at the point of listening once in a while whereas I used to set my alarm to listen. I tuned into O&A the other day for the first time in two weeks after my vacation, I was laughing within minutes, HARD! Nobody wants to laugh with Howard more than I do, their just getting fewer and farther between. It makes me sad, I feel sorry for him. To have such a career with so many victories and accomplishments, then just puss out and lose it, and lie like he used to accuse his competitors of? He HAS become Imus. Sad, sad, sad.
