MENANDS, N.Y. -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton refused to say Wednesday if Al Gore should be the party's presidential nominee in 2004, but said she still has no interest in running herself.

"I'm just not going to get into that," she said in an interview with The Associated Press when asked about Gore and the 2004 campaign. "I want everybody who believes they should run to get out there and make the case. The cauldron of a campaign is a very telling environment."

Asked if she felt Gore would seek the 2004 nomination, Clinton said, "I have no idea."

She said the last contact she or her husband had with Gore was when he called about a week ago to wish the former president a happy birthday.

Pressed about her own possible presidential ambitions for 2004, Clinton shook her head.

"I don't even want to talk about this. It's not anything that's going to happen," she said.

"I don't have any long-term plans," she said when asked about running for a second Senate term in 2006. "I'm pretty focused on day-by-day."

The former first lady also continued her frequent attacks on President Bush, suggesting his handling of the federal budget and the economy would be good for Democrats in the upcoming elections.

"I believe we've got a good case to make already. The administration has undone so much of the success of the last eight years in less than eight months," she said, as she clutched a glass of iced tea in the Menands Diner just north of Albany. "Imagine how it's going to look in a year or two."

In an earlier speech to about 150 Schenectady-area Democrats, Clinton also attacked Bush's handling of the federal budget and the tax cut he pushed through Congress and which has Americans getting back tax rebate checks of up to $600 per couple this summer.

She said that because of "the hole that this tax cut has dug for us," she and some congressional colleagues were considering revisiting an idea earlier rejected by Congress--to legislate economic triggers that could slow down the tax cut.

"I think we should revisit the triggers," she told reporters after her speech.

She said that while the idea was earlier rejected, that might not be the case now given projections of a shrinking budget surplus and the possible need to use Social Security funds to balance the budget.

"Now, it's not a theoretical argument," she said.

Yeah right...that "carpet muncher" didn't have to come to NY to run for senate and now she's just trying to divert attention from heself so that she doesn't look like she used NY to get the chance to run for president...

When I have fears that I may cease to be/ Before my pen has gleaned my teaming brain,/ Before high-piled books, in charactery,/ Hold like rich garners the full ripened grain;/ When I behold, upon the night's starred face,/ Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,/ And think that I may never live to trace/ Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance,/ And when I feel, fair creature of a hour,/ That I shall never look upon thee more,/ Never have relish in the fairy power/ Of unreflecting love--then on the shore/ Of the wide world I stand alone, and think/ Till love and fame to nothingness do sink. --Keats

It's easy to accuse when you don't provide factual information. Now, if that was an un-biased reporter who was searching for a little truth then upon her stating that the current administration has "undone" so much he/she would have then asked "What exactly has been undone?"

And I don't even want people to talk about social security and the money being talked about that is going to come out of that fund. We had a republican majority for the first 7 months of this administration and never before did you hear of this. You end up giving majority to the democrats, because of the switch of parties from the Vermont Senator and the first thing you hear within their first month of control is that they are taking billions out of social security in the new budget. Now, if you want to be a smart tax payer find out what are they doing with this money. Already 50% of it is being calculated into extra "social programs". This extends well beyond just welfare or any type of government assistance into the "arts". So, when you don't have any money coming from social security when you retire, at least you can enjoy the picture that will be hanging in the hallway of the old age home you'll be in.

I am not a fan of Hillary. IMO she is still an unexperienced polition that just piggy backed on the fact that her husband was president.

But GW Bush? I can't say that he is presidential material. The fact is money is being taking out of SS, and yet he still gave a tax cut.

No offense strawberry, but thats a lame arguement. Of coarse you heard nothing of it because the republicans did not want you to know. You are going to try and paint an ugly picture of Democrats because they let the public know something that was being kept on the down-low.

Gore did bring this fact up in every debate and Bush flat out said no money would be taken out of SS. I voted for Bush too, I always vote Democrat but I really did not like Gore either. Now I am starting to regret my decision. Gore would of at least taken his job serious. George Bush is just a poster boy at the moment. He is a man of delegation not of self action. He put his faith in who the party TOLD(not recommend) him who to put faith in.

FAct 2 : not true at all
his budget plan started with his tax cut, which was passed (or rammed down the congress' throat) before any budget was passed, the first time in eons that this was done. Meaning that he cut funding before anyone could see how much funding was needed

Gee, It only took 6 or 7 months to undo what took the Clintons 8 years to do. I guess they didn't do very much.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the rebate part of this Daschle and Gephardt's idea after they relaized they would lose the tax cut fight?
"If we're going to do this, we should give the people some of their money now" or the like?

So what has Hilary exactly brought New York so far, besides huge doubt in our transportation funding that wasn't there before?

Thankles... love that!

Hillary is a political joke, as is George W. They are both in positions well above their experience.

Democrats and Republicans spend time attacking one another and not working on the problems of the government. If they spent more time being solution-oriented, they would work together more often.

They should pay the three brances commissions on the work hey accomplish. A whole lot more would get done for the American people.

As for the source of the tax cut and who suggested using social security to pay for items in the budget, it was the Republican-controlled Congress that pushed these items through as the economy floundered, so it is not the idea person, but the facilitator that deserves the blame for bad timing.

George W. was selected (not elected) after driving four businesses into the ground, being used for his name by the Texas Rangers and displacing a woman as Governor... not much of a resume for the post of leader of the free world. When the whole spy plane mess with China came to a head, I for one was afraid that Bush was going to fabricate a war to improve the economy, just like his father.

GW= a low-rent Dan Quayle

end of fucking rant

this country hasb een heading in a downward spiral since the middle 50's. Politicians have sucked, the whole political system has sucked, America ain' what it used to be. there needs to be a shake up soon, or there will be more than a shakeup, there will be an explosion.

Currently the biggest party that supports this is the Green Party. There are other parties that would too such as the Libertarian, Socialist, etc. parties. Some of these parties are a bit zany on a few issues so that's why I am a Green.

People need to stop bitching about how both parties suck and that there is no alternative. Stand up to both parties and demand that the two-party system be changed. Because when the choice is choosing between two people that are pretty much the same I would go 3rd Party.

Why was Nader barred from the Presidential Debates? Because they were afraid he would strike a chord with the American People.
