Reading this message board I see alot of people are going away to college for the first time. As a junior, maybe I can offer some advice and words of wisdom for those who have doubts or fears about this new step in life.

Anything that you seen or heard about college in movies or TV is pretty much bullshit, it's more complicated and not as sensationalized as 90210 or Road Trip. Most likely, you would have to be very rich or intelligent to go to such a functional college.

College is completely different from high school, here you are independent and allowed to make your own decisions. There are no bathroom passes or in crowds. Even if you were the hottest shit your senior year, you are equal to everyone once you are a freshman.
In some cases "dorks" in HS will probably more respected because maturity plays a part in college life and people will began to notice people for their personality or their kindness as opposed to the sound system in their cars or their clothing style.
College is also a clean slate, you don't have the burden of a reputation when you first walk in your dorm room. You have to go through the process of making new friends. Remember, in the beginning everyone is just as nervous as you are not matter how much they try and hide it. Eventually you will have friends and enemies, but hopefully you will learn to be civil to everyone no matter which group they fall in. Fist fights and bullying is frowned upon in college as opposed to HS.

Academically, you are free to learn what you feel is important to you. That is as soon as you go through the buracrasy of required classes and registration problems. You go to a class 2 or 3 times a week. The emphasis is on independent studying. This means that time management is important. At times it's unfair that your class grade is based on only 2 or 3 exams in the semester regardless of the effort you try to put in, but that is one of the examples of how unfair and blind society could be. Might as well get used to it in college.

Hopefully no matter what your it says on your GPA, you should learn alot about your interested in. I believe that the GPA system is very unfair and it does not reflect that person in an accurate manner. You can try hard and put so much time and energy, but your friend who skips classes, doesn't take notes or studies, maybe event cheats can end up having a higher grade when he doesn't deserve it and learns nothing. Another example of how life is a bitch.

Don't worry, you'll learn to adapt to college life on your own. No matter what just remember, you are there to get an education. Although I belive higher education should be a right, today it is still considered a priviledge. No matter how ugly the process might be, how long and frustrating, it will be worth it when you get your degree.

For freshman, this is their first real slice of independence. Many of them will get smashed and try and get laid every night. It's okay to have fun, just remeber your priorties. From my own experience, many those who fucked around too much and acted like jerks have dropped since freshman year.

College is supposed to introduce you to a world different from your hometown. You will meet new people from all over with different viewpoints and personalities. The important thing is to respect everyone for who they are. It is hard coming back to your hometown come thanksgiving as you are getting used to a new world, but don't think you are better than those who don't have the same opportunity as you do, that would defeat the purpose of growing up.

Finally you learn alot inside and outside of the classroom and don't take it for granted. College changes people in many ways due to it's independent atmosphere. I remember in HS when I dressed like a skater with baggy JNCO's. Now as I write this, I am wearing regular fitting jeans with a button down shirt. I know a kid who was on the National Honor Society in HS and everyone thought would be succesful. Last I heard, he was kicked out freshman year in Maryland for drugs.

A lot can happen in a short time after HS. Appreciate your youth, because you have the benefit of learning from your mistakes and hopefully growing from them.

Have fun and learn something this semsester guys. :)

I actually have a big dorm room, haven't found weed yet but will soon and found a mexican place that doesn't card. And classes still haven't began. Unfortunately, i've also realized that i'm an awful conversationalist, i'm hardpressed to begin a conversation with a girl, and the only things i can discuss is film, tv, why religion sucks or rant about politics. I am a boring personality-less mess.

75% of my top 10% of students (myself included) were friends of the green. I bet this is true for 90% of high schools around the country.

Rooned,
Well Done! You summed things up very well.

I remember that while the independence was great, it was intimidating in that for the first time there is nobody else watching over you. So, it's not that hard to screw up. There were several guys on my floor that didn't come back for the 2nd Semester or the following year because of poor grades. Just be responsible & ORGANIZED; don't let partying get in the way of studying. But remember: Study hard, party hard ( you'll have alot of stress that needs to get blown off, but at the right time).

Also, if your getting stressed out, talk to someone (Roommate, Friends-school or at home, RA, Dean, Prof., or Parents). Also, if things are really tough, GO TO THE MENTAL HEALTH CENTER!! There really is no shame!!! And there are a number of us on the Board who have been through all this. We are a resource, so use us! I am
willing to help (check my E-Mail).

Ikea, start by socializing with your floormates. If there are ladies on the floor, make friends so that they will help you meet outside ladies. Classes are a good place to meet women. Forget Politics or Religion; talk about fun topics. A little Alcohol helps. And remember, this is the time when all of those HS virgins are looking to get laid! So be cool & you'll have alot of fun!
(BTW, remember that doing the alphabet during oral really works).

That said, I hope that you guys will be willing to share your videos/pics of your debauchery (esp. those of the naked coeds) with us older folks!

BTW, where are you all going & what are your majors?
