| Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00  | The way we manufacture everything currently is based on difficulty and the ammount of effort needed to use that item. Why? Its quite simple. We need it that way. Not need in a way that its either that way or we cant do it, but we need it that way just because its easier. Heres my episode: Sometime in mid-October Microsft will release their new version of Windows called Windows XP. I was on the Microsoft website when i leaned of it, and too the virtual tour. Click here to play along at home! At first I was kind of entrigued with the concept of a Windows that is specially optimized for better memory storage(after all thats what makes the computer slow) and Internet access. As I took the tour, I was stupified and at a loss for words. The overall layout and design reminded me of the video game my little sister used to help her learn vowel sounds and begin reading (stay away gonzo. i said sister not brother). After going on in the tour, I noticed that the entire computer is run with Internet Explorer (not much of a change) which pretty much takes away the option of using Netscape for those of you who may want to. This is when I gave up. I came to the comclusion that Microsoft beleives all Americans to be bumbling, stammering, lazy, illiterant, bafoons! Just plain STUPID! I dont mean stupid in a sence that we are ignorant, but in a sence that we dont know any other way. After talking to a few people about it (thank you K1d and others ;)), I was brouight to the realization that we, as a people, are stupid. Not all of us, but too many of us. The whole reason Microsoft is doing this to beable to reach out to the lowest common denominator. In doing so, all of us become accustom to this method and somewhat dependant upon it. There's no way to fight it. Its impossible. The only possible way to correct what is being done in everything ranginf from cars to computers would be to progressively make it more difficult to use. This way we would be working foreward again. Granted, making things easier is a comfort, but bottom line: It cam get to be too much. CONCLUSION: People who are dependant on things being simple are also making us somewhat dependant on it. Simplicity and ease are only productive when they arent abused such as by MS. Thats all Im driv'n at..if ya think about it really. I appologize, this wasnt supposed to be a rant - just a complaint about MS Windows - but it turned out that way once I started writing. edit***I am sorry about the length and now that its posted, I did get a little carried away, but any thoughts?***edit  AIM: PaintballOpAnt19 Im A Racist Prick. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | There really isn't a way to get out of it. Every computer will ship with XP pre-loaded. No more NT. No more 9x. No more Me. No more 2000. XP is the catch-all. You can try and boycott it, as I and probably every other pro will... but will it do any good? Not likely. For every pro there's a thousand idiots who will feel that with XP, they'll FINALLY be able to understand computers. And with their registration crap, they'll actually try to make us all pay for it.... criminal in itself. But someone will find (or maybe already has found) a crack for it... Everyone knows that Microsoft is driven by their own bullshit. The bullshit that puts as much money as possible into their pockets without actually caring what John Q. User has to shell out to get in compliance.  Me droogies: HydratedPeach is siiiiingin' in the rain. Syndra has graduated and will one day take on droogs of her own. One position available. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Nov. 00 | AM, I've used Linux a few times. For work applications, it's REALLY nice. And much more stable than Windows. The problem is all the IT people I've talked to say at least half the games for PC don't work with Linux because their looking for Windows authentications, etc. "When I was born I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half." - Gracie Allen A much wittier reply came to mind immediately after I clicked the 'Send' button. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | For everything besides games I prefer to use Linux. As for games there are a lot being made specifically made for Linux. You can run an emulation environment of Windows in Linux and run any Windows program easily and games are progressing faster than I thought. Funny thing is that the emulator(when compaitable) runs the game better than a native Windows environment. I think the figure is around 10-15% better. I generally use Linux mostly and Windows for games incompaitable.
