| September 9, 2001 -- COPENHAGEN - Pornography and prostitutes have a greater calming effect on elderly patients than traditional medical treatment such as drug therapy, Danish caregivers have discovered.
Staffers at a leading nursing home in the Danish capital have been broadcasting pornography on the building's internal videochannel every Saturday night for several years.
And if videos and erotic magazines don't relieve the tension, residents can ask the staff to order a prostitute for them.
The caregivers have told the Danish media that pornography is healthier, cheaper and easier to use than medicine, said Lars Elmsted Petersen, a spokesman for the Danish seniors' lobbying group Aeldresagen.
Earlier this year, the Danish government released a report stating that sexuality is an integral part of life for seniors and the disabled. It recommended that caregivers help elderly residents satisfy their sexual needs.
Gerontology experts in that country agree with the practice.
The issue of sex and seniors is often overlooked at nursing homes, said Maj-Britt Auning, a department head at a 115-resident facility.
Normally, "if residents show their sexuality, they are labeled as 'old perverts,' " said Auning, who has been working with elderly and senile patients for 20 years. "It's time that we show the elderly some respect and take their needs seriously, including the sexual ones."
She said both men and women appreciate the sexually explicit videos.
