(Reuters) - Warner Bros. film studio Thursday said it will release a digitally enhanced version of director Stanley Kubrick's classic meditation on man and machine, "2001: A Space Odyssey", in movie theaters this October. The science-fiction movie debuted in 1968 and set the world astir with its tale of man's excursions into deep space and his interaction with an evil computer named HAL. When originally released, the film sparked controversy over the future use of computers and whether they would come to control people's lives. This new version of the original 70 mm film has been digitally enhanced, and the soundtrack has been remastered for today's theaters. "We are extremely pleased to offer this brand-new print with superior sound to a legion of devoted fans and introduce a new generation of moviegoers to this extraordinary film at the highest level of quality," Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said in a statement. The re-release premieres Oct. 5 at the Cinerama Theater in Seattle. Subsequent engagements will follow at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and The Uptown in Washington, D.C. The movie was nominated for four Academy Awards, including best director for Kubrick. It won one Oscar for visual effects. Kubrick, the legendary director of films like 1960's "Spartacus" and 1971's "A Clockwork Orange", died in March 1999 just ahead of the release of his last film, "Eyes Wide Shut", which starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
