The 47-year-old drunk charged into the post office and handed over a note saying ``This is a robbery,'' the local newspaper Bergensavisen said on Friday. But his wife's name and personal details were on the back of the demand note, the newspaper said. The man told a court he did not remember the robbery, but admitted he had a suspicion of having been up to no good when he woke up and saw a picture of the be-knickered robber in the newspaper and found a large wad of money in his living room. CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - A group of Venezuelan prisoners stitched their lips together as part of a protest hunger strike to press their demands to be transferred to another wing of their prison, authorities said on Wednesday. ``They just used a few stitches, it was very superficial,'' Prison Services director Gen. Fabio Figueredeo told Reuters. He could not give the exact number of inmates who took part in the protest on Tuesday at Tocuyito prison in Carabobo state, west of Caracas. The Caracas daily El Universal reported a total of 48 Tocuyito inmates ``sewed their mouths up.'' Figueredeo said the prisoners were persuaded by authorities to end their protest. He played down the significance of their injuries, saying it was quite common for inmates to mutilate themselves to try to force officials to accept their demands. Venezuela's 25 prisons are considered by human rights groups to be among the worst in the world. Deaths and injuries, usually the result of violent gang fights, are common. Figueredo said the hunger strikers were part of a group of around 60 inmates who were demanding to be transferred out of an administration block where they were temporarily housed. He described them as ``refugees,'' prisoners who had been forcibly driven out of the prison's normal accommodation section by other inmates. Some, for example, may have been accused of stealing from fellow prisoners, he said. Authorities estimate two or three inmates a week die violent deaths in Venezuela's jails. Officials say pistols, knives, drugs and even mobile phones are frequently smuggled in by visitors. President Hugo Chavez' government has announced an emergency program to modernize the country's penitentiaries, including the planned construction of five or six new jails. AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch sex workers are set to fight for better pay and conditions in the country's thriving brothels and sex clubs by setting up the world's first trade union for prostitutes, campaigners said Wednesday. The Rode Draad (Red Thread) group, which campaigns for the rights of the country's 20,000 prostitutes, said the initiative was backed by the country's biggest trade union federation. The Dutch, with a long-standing liberal tradition, lifted a near century-long ban on brothels last year. Prostitution had already largely been above board in a country renowned for its tolerance since the French emperor, Napoleon, legalized it in 1815. ``A trade union is going to be formed. In about a year it should be up and running,'' Rode Draad spokeswoman Christy ten Broeke said. Campaigners hoped to start recruiting union members from the world's oldest profession by early next year. ``Nowhere else in the world would sex workers be considered full partners for negotiations and intermediation,'' she said. Dutch brothels are regulated and inspected by local authorities and the country's labor laws apply to prostitutes and their employers. Sex workers are also eligible for invalidity or unemployment benefit, according to a government Web site.
