A French journalist disguised as a woman has been arrested in eastern Afghanistan, near the border with Pakistan. Michel Peyrard works for the tabloid-style news magazine Paris Match. He was arrested with two other men, thought to be Pakistanis, who had acted as his guide. "He was dressed as a woman because it was the only possibility of getting into Afghanistan Paris Match news editor Marion Mertens The arrest comes one day after British journalist Yvonne Ridley was released by the Taleban. Paris Match news editor Marion Mertens told BBC News Online that Mr Peyrard, 44, had previously covered conflicts including those in Chechnya, the Palestinian territories, Kosovo and Macedonia. He also covered the quashing of pro-democracy demonstrations in China's Tiananmen Square. "He is an experienced journalist doing his job," she said. She said Mr Peyrard had been in Pakistan for three weeks, but for the last week had been crossing in and out of Afghanistan. He has written a major feature which will be published in this week's edition of the magazine, she said. The Taleban authorities have moved Michel Peyrard to Jalalabad where he is in the custody of the intelligence department News of Mr Peyrard's arrest emerged via the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press, which said he was detained in the Goshta district of Nangarhar province, 35km (22 miles) east of the city of Jalalabad. "The Taleban authorities have moved Michel Peyrard to Jalalabad where he is in the custody of the intelligence department," the agency said. The French Foreign Ministry said it had no official confirmation of the man's identity, but ruled out the possibility that he was a member of French special forces who are currently operating inside Afghanistan.
