| Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01  | OK, this is REALLY long, and I thought about putting it into the FU board because initially I thought we got screwed, but whatever...on with the story. Through our business, my husband and I know a guy who is high up in the NY Road Runners org., and about 3 months ago we asked him to get one of our friends into the race - he did, and then asked if we wanted to host an elite US runner who was running the marathon and competing in the US championships. We were all for it (we've both run the marathon before and thought meeting an elite runner would be interesting. So, we furnished the spare bedroom, had a sweatshirt made for him, bought him special food, made arrangements so he could use my car etc. (This is where the FU would have come in) My husband picked him up from the airport on 11/3 (he's from WA), and basically took a lot of time off from work to show him around so we got to know the guy pretty well. He seemed nice enough, he said he was hoping to win the US championships by running a 2:14 - he felt good all week. We also called our local paper, and they interviewed him and came over on Saturday to take pictures. We threw a party for him on Friday night and by Sunday morning thought we had done everything we could to make him comfortable and to allow him to rest (which he wanted to do). He told us he didn't like staying in hotels and he appreciated us letting him stay. Sunday comes, and off he goes - we were actually worried about having a Seinfeld - so I bought him his own alarm clock as a joke so he wouldn't miss the race. Anyway, he made it. My husband went back into the city to watch him, and I tried to watch as much as possible at home. I was surprised that I never saw him on TV, and I never saw his name on the last of top 5 US runners during the coverage, but again, I was home w/2 little kids so I didn't get to see that much, but I did call my husband to find out if he had seen him, and surprisingly, he didn't see him either. But, he eventually called and said Martin finished. I checked the web and saw that he had finished 5th (still prize money level) so great, he didn't win but did pretty well. He didn't go to the awards ceremony, and even weirder, by Sunday night, he was listed on some websites, but not others. Turns out the reason is that he was disqualified. For whatever reason, his chip only registered at the start and finish and not at the 3 checkpoints in between. He claimed that he ran the whole thing, but didn't put up too much of a fight and left for WA on Monday afternoon. Since then, my husband has been talking to the race director and on Monday they said they were going to review the videotapes, and they were also looking into his background. It turns out he actually called to get into the marathon, and although his PR was only 2:28, they let him in because they wanted as many elite US runners as possible. They also found out that the half marathon he claims he won he was disqualified from. He told us he was sponsored by PUMA - another lie. Today we found out that after reviewing the tapes (the head honcho reviews them), he was not on any tapes at the 3 checkpoints. There is also an unconfirmed report by a NYRRC spotter of seeing Martin jump the barricade near the exit from the park. The mile 25 spotter was the 1st to record Martin's bib number (70), (mile 25 is at the park exit onto CPS). Finally, there was another uncomforted report of Martin riding the subway. The marathon has closed the book on him. My husband sent him an e-mail yesterday asking why (even though he knew he'd never understand the why) and how he did it? Martin wrote back that he was also reviewing the tapes and claimed that he did run the race. Needless to say, we called our local paper and told them what happened, they've obviously scratched the original story and are debating writing this version - I hope they do, it'll be a good story when our kids are older and they see the videotape of Martin singing Happy Birthday to our son (he turned 2 on Sunday) and they ask who he is. On the up side, we now have a guarantee of being able to run the NYC marathon whenever we want. | Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | Just one last update - the race director just said that it turns out almost all of his races are bogus - he's talking to race directors across the country, and one by one it's coming out that people have seen him jumping in/out of the course. This guy is just a nut job. Thank God he wasn't a homocidal nut job! | ||||
