O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 ![]() | If its a family member, you don't always have to go. People deal with grief in their own ways, and that is always the excuse you could use as to why you weren't there. If you have a friend's family member die and they are a close friend, its always important to go to be there as a support for your friend. Also, you have to remember a lot of people judge people's lives by how many people are at their funeral...it is this reason that I don't want a funeral.![]() USA

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 ![]() | I dont only think of it as respect to the person that died, I think of it also as respect to their family members as well. Showing them that you are also there for them. I had 2 funerals to go to in 2001, my great grandmother's and a kid I went to high school with who was the same age as me (20). My great grandmother's was really hard, but if I didnt go I didnt want my family dealing with the whole "Why isnt she here" deal. Obviously them lying there is not the way you want to remember the person, but as it was said before its closure to some. The whole thing in my eyes is a respect issue. Plus for family members of the dead, i know its comforting to see that many people wanted to come see said person one last time. ![]() Heartbreaker you've got the best of me But I just keep on comin' back incessantly Oh why did you have to run your game on me I should have known right from the start you'd go & break my heart This message was edited by GrkqtOandAfan on 1-1-02 @ 3:36 PM

Psychopath Registered: Aug. 00 ![]() | It is very selfish not to goto a friend or a family member's funeral. Forget about how you feel, and go pay your respects to the family. It's all about respecting and comforting the deceased person's family, it's not about you or your feelings.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 ![]() | I think it all depends on where you are during the funeral. If you are out partying or getting together with other friends while others are at the funeral its wrong. It's your choice to go or not, but it all depends if you are skipping it to have fun or to do something else. If I don't go to a funeral I usually tell them and I stay home. I think it wouldn't show respect to the person's family if you were having a great time while they were mourning the loss of a person.![]()

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 ![]() | In my opinion, the wake is more important than the funeral. The only reason to go to either is to support the family and friends of the dead, or for you to get some sense of closure. If you feel better served by not attending, by all means that is appropriate. If anybody else is offended, they aren't you and won't understand. Feel no guilt, because it is your decision. Weddings and funerals are times when many people use guilt to make others act the way they want them to. Do what you gotta do!![]()

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 ![]() | I don't think it's wrong per se, however you should consider that your family and friends may not see it that way. You have to ask yourself about why you do not want to go: is it important enough to outweigh pissing others off? Will you feel upset if the family/friends of the deceased are counting on you? Perhaps it's wise to just send flowers or a condolence card, and make it a point to visit soon after the funeral. I felt the same way you do after the deaths of my best friend and my grandfather within a three month period. I felt the whole thing was just gruesome, and would tear myself up for a day or two and then just go and get it over with. I must admit, when it was me in that first row, I wanted to see as many family and freinds as I could, but I never held it against anyone if I did not see them there. I must admit, i like the Jewish tradition of Shiva(sp?). The body goes in the ground the next day, and then the family mourns with friends over the next week. I also feel an odd sense of comfort in the tradiditons passed along on the Irish side of my family. The Irish wake, when done right, can be a true celebration of the deceased's life. The real answer to your question is, do YOU think it's wrong to not go? BTW, I have instructed my family to throw an Irish wake when I cash in my chips-just leave a Guiness on the bar for me. ![]() AIM:isdononthephone This message was edited by Is Don on the phone? on 1-1-02 @ 7:42 PM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 01 ![]() | My father used to forbid me to go to funerals. He thought he was doing me a favor, since I'm "the sensitive one," and he was convinced that it was better to not even inform me of a family member's passing until weeks afterwards. Needless to say, this did more harm than good, and a few years ago, when my great-grandmother passed away, I demanded to be allowed to attend the service. I personally found it much more therapeutic to be able to be among my family and reminisce about Grandma. In the past few months, I've lost my grandfather and a friend, and have been unable to attend their services due to distance. In both cases, there's still a feeling of a lack of closure, that I've never truly had the chance to say goodbye. ![]() Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 ![]() | There is nothing worse then attending a funeral that you don't want to attend, for whatever reason. I'd say go if you honestly want to go out of respect or for the closure but don't go for the hell of it or out of obligation. What obligation could you possibly have for a dead person? And do you think they'd even care either way? I don't want a huge dragged out funeral personally. I'd rather be put to rest quietly and without the whole "show". If people need to mourn for me, I'd hope they'd have enough common sense to go to a strip club, get a lap dance and do some shots in my honor. ;) ![]()
