Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | I was sent a warning about this, thought I'd share it, I have no further details, but better a false alarm than a virus like this, if it's been posted already elsewere sorry, but better safe than sorry > >Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2001 18:08:41 -0700 > A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft (www.Microsoft.com) and by McAfee (www.mcafee.com) as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN (www.cnn.com). This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft itself. So don't open any mails with subject "A Virtual Card for You." As soon as you get the mail, delete it. Please pass on this mail to all your friends. Forward this to everyone in your address book. I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all. Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You," do not open it. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries(.dll files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up. ARG I NEED COFFEE !! This message was edited by Tweek on 3-10-01 @ 2:20 PM

Psychopath Registered: Feb. 01 | argh, never open up an e-mail from someone you don't know. Period! I can't believe these stories like that previous melissa virus where these tools that working in these big corporations open up random e-mails. and then the virus spreads like mad. Yeah this sounded like a hoax before tweek confirmed it. the best hoax i've heard was the one where a computer virus would fry the monitor until it goes on fire.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: Hot damn, I'm glad I'm not the only one in this fucking world that understands that fact. Tweek - I do, however, give you credit for checking on it from reliable sources. It's actually as good to get hoaxes into the open as it is real viruses. I personally love the emails that say "IBM AND AOL HAVE CONFIRMED THAT IT'S A VERY DANGEROUS VIRUS" - considering AOL always states that they received their info from McAfee and IBM sold their AntiVirus products to Symantec. By the way, here's something to ponder - McAfee always "announces" these viruses (simply cause they probably pay more to the people who write the article - if you think it's not blatant advertising, you're silly) - but whose site is completely inaccessible until 5pm on the day a virus hits? Symantec. They get pounded because they get their updates out first. I may be a Symantec shill but that's only cause I've tested both products. I've seen a computer that had the latest version of McAfee, and the latest definitions, and didn't detect one damn virus. Then we installed Norton AntiVirus 2000, got a LiveUpdate, and ran a manual scan. 67 files were infected. 67 files were cleaned. 3 weeks later, the PO was cut for Norton AntiVirus Enterprise Edition. 2 weeks after that, it was on every PC in the company. BTW, ANDYKOOM.... the viruses today, like Melissa, like ILOVEYOU, like Naked Wife, don't come from people you don't know. The way they work is that the virus emails itself to everyone in your Outlook Contact list. If you have the person in your Contacts, chances are that you know them. So it gets emailed to everyone you know. Then what happens when it gets into a corporate email system, running Exchange, is that the user gets this email from whoever it was, clicks on the attachment, and then not only does the virus go out to all of their personal contact, but also everyone in the Exchange Global Address List - in other words, a copy to everyone in the company. In a company of, say, 5000 people, one click from one person goes out to all 5000. A certain percentage of those people are going to click the attachment as well - that's another 5000 emails per click, not to mention all the personal contacts each time. This is how the virus spreads so quickly and brings email servers to their knees. This message was edited by FollowThisLogic on 3-11-01 @ 2:16 AM
