O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A man who beat to death another father in front of their children at a youth hockey practice was sentenced Friday to 6-to-10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Thomas Junta, 44, had asked to be put on supervised probation with community service. He had faced up to 20 years in prison. Junta sat handcuffed, with his head hung low as victim Michael Costin's three sons, sister and mother spoke. "Please punish Thomas Junta and do not allow him to soon get out of prison and ruin another family's life," Costin's middle son, Michael, said. "No matter how much of a sentence that you give to Thomas Junta, my dad got more." The judge went along with the recommended sentence from prosecutors, though he called it "lenient" and "generous" and said he even considered exceeding it. Junta did not speak during the hearing and called no witnesses on his behalf. He sobbed heavily as his defense attorney, Thomas Orlandi Jr., read segments of the letters Junta had written to his two children while the jury deliberated his conviction. The two fathers fought after Junta objected to rough play during a pickup hockey game in July 2000. Costin was supervising his three sons, Junta's son and several other boys on the ice. The jury found that Junta did not intend to kill Costin, but went too far during the fight. Before being led away Friday, Junta raised his shackled hands to blow a kiss and wave to his family seated behind him. Barbara Tracy, his sister, sobbed. Costin had four children, ages 11 through 14. His father, Gus, said Costin had a drinking problem and had been in and out of prison for much of his adult life. But in the final few years of his life, he had quit drinking and was working steadily as a carpenter and painter. Six months before he was killed, he regained custody of his children. The jurors in Junta's trial never heard about Costin's troubled past, which included seven prison stints between 1983 and 1995 on charges of breaking and entering, drunken driving and assaulting a police officer. They also never heard that he had taken antidepressants for years and had spent time in psychiatric hospitals. The judge said Friday he was "troubled" and "disturbed" by letters submitted by the defense that raised Costin's past. Those references "attempt to shift the focus to the victim as the culprit. These references cheapen the value of human life," Judge Charles Grabau said. E-Mail Me special thanks to maynard and grumpy for the sig pic and the help posting it

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | I live in Boston, and this Junta guy got hosed. Costin was a complete dickhead, he had been in and out of jail his whole live, was fucked in the head, and on drugs because of it. Costin came back at Junta on two different occasions before Junta dropped him. Costin was the first one to take a swing, and just becuase Junta was able to land a couple punches he goes to jail? Yeah yeah there were women yelling "stop it! You're going to kill him!" Well all women do that. When you're a guy you learn to tune out the voice of women MOST OF THE TIME espeically when you are fighting. He had the guy down, and hit him a couple times just to make sure that Costin (who again, had a history of legal, voilent, and mental problems that everyone knew about) wouldn't come back at him again.

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | Even though Costin did attack Junta first, I'm not so sure that he got exactly hosed. It takes more than landing a few punches to actually kill someone with your own hands. If the man wouldve fallen back to the concrete after getting hit struck his head on the pavement and died as a result of that it would be a little different. But that wasn't the case. The fact that Junta just pummeled this guy till he was dead says something. Anyone whos ever been in a bad fight knows that it gets to the point where a person just becomes incapacitated and cant do anything to defend himself. He took Costin to that point of being helpless and just continued. He let his anger get the best of him and now he's gotta pay. This message was edited by itsamiata on 1-25-02 @ 6:28 PM

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Jul. 00 | quote:No, he didn't. He did not beat the guy to death right there in a fit of rage. The guy died two days later. If Junta intended to kill costin, would it have taken two days? He outweighed cositn by a hundred and fourteen pounds. If he wanted him to die he could very well have made sure he was dead. quote:So, if the children hadn't been there, you'd accept probation as a fair sentence? I am so effin tired of this "oh, the poor children" bullshit. Those children learned a valuable lesson that day. You don't go mouthin' off like a punk ass bitch when the other guy outweighs you by a hundred and fourteen pounds. And, this "Junta is abig bully" line is getting a little old as well. You are obviously a pretty small timid person. People that look like Junta are hardly ever bullies. Sure the people that looked like Junta in high school were bullies but, by the time they get to be Junta's age... they don't need to be bullies anymore. On the other hand... Little skinny bitches like costin that have been pushed around all their lives and have a chip on their shoulder. They are far too often punk ass bitches that think they can say whatever the fuck they want to whoever the fuck they want and there will be no consequences. Well, there is. You act like a bitch and you get fucked like a bitch. Don't forget it all you short skinny punk ass fuckin bitches. All I'm saying is... I know about as much about what went on there that day as any of you do. We weren't there. We don't know. To assume that Junta is guilty because he's bigger is just fucking rediculous. It makes as much sense as assuming costin is guilty because he's smaller. And, there is a huge difference between planning for days to ambush a guy at his son's hockey practice and beat him until he's dead and getting into a shoving match over a dirty hit during a game and losing your temper and beating a guy to death and even more so to fight someone off in self deffence and have him die two days later. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | As a former hockey dad I can understand this happening and am surprised it hasn't happened more. Hockey parents loose their cool very easily. I'm not justifying this dudes actions, I just understand how it can happen. The biggest problem in youth hockey is poor refereeing and kids that take cheap hits and play violently. There are kids that feel they have to go out and try to maim someone just to prove they are tough hockey players. My son was very, very good. Some of you that I have talked to about him are aware of that. Unfortunately, one year ago today his career came to an end with a serious career ending injury. Because he was recognized as a very good player, there were a number of cheap shots taken against him. Early last season in a tournament in the DC area, one particular defenseman took a tomahawk chop to his head with a stick in a play behind the ref. I was livid and had to be restrained from going after their coach after I saw the coach high five the kid when he skated back to the bench. The hit gave my son a serious concussion. That was not the injury that ended his career. The one that did was a clean hit and was just misfortunate. Had it been a cheap hit, I would probably be in prison today. So even though this guy must serve time for his actions, I for one understand how it can happen and feel that the length of the sentence is fair.
