But the stupid part of the equation: There is no single minority group that outnumbers the whites. The largest ethnic group is still white, not black, asian or hispanic. A Minnesota high school principal is facing a lawsuit because he would not allow a student to wear a sweatshirt bearing the words "Straight Pride." Sixteen-year-old Elliott Chambers, a student at Woodbury High School, in Woodbury, Minn., filed charges this week against the school district for violating his freedom of speech, according to a Fox News report. Chambers' case is being handled by the American Family Association Center for Law & Policy, a Christian legal group based in Mississippi that has a special section on its Web site devoted to combating the "homosexual agenda." Chambers said he intended no offense to gay and lesbian students by wearing the shirt, which featured a stick figure drawing of a man and a woman holding hands. On a local talk show, he said he equated his sweatshirt with the presence of pink triangles in the school marking "safe spaces" for gay students. School officials commented only to say that Principal Dana Babbit was only doing what he thought was right to keep students safe from violence. There had been incidents of race-related violence in the past at the school. Chambers said students had told him the shirt offended them before Babbit required him to remove it in January. "It's not meant to bash gays or anything like that at all," he told Fox. "It's just a simple shirt that says 'Hey ... I have pride in being straight.'" One teacher at the school told Fox she had a different view. "It's just like kids can't wear racially unethical things or they can't come to school with sweatshirts that advertise beer," Paula Borochoff said. "I think that in order to make the school comfortable for everybody, school principals have an obligation to ban things like that that are hurtful to other people."
