O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I was hoping someone could help me out with my cable modem. My connection doesn't seem to be as fast as it should. Does anyone know where I can get a download or two to opitmize my connection? I had my connection checked at C-Net and it was 463.6, which should be very fast but it takes a while for most pages to load for me. I also get alot of error messages connecting to sites. I have to refresh the page to make them come up. If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. Kindest Regards, Your Name

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Every so often I have problems with my cable modem, kinda like you described. Earlier today, every page was loading slowly, times like that you have to figure the network is bogged down or having other problems. Other things that may cause problems are security settings( particularly firewalls), cache size, settings for cache (how long to keep a page) etc. Try dumping your cache (temp. internet files). More than that, if you still have problems, call your provider's tech support line. Say hello to my little friend! I have officialy adopted:Monstertaz

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Cable Modem & xDSL Speed Tweak (Windows 9x) Popular Category: Performance > Network & Internet Use these settings with your Cable Modem or DSL broadband Internet connection, to boost network throughput performance with Windows 95, 98 and ME. If you are using Windows 95, first download and install the Winsock Update from Microsoft before proceeding to the steps below. Open your registry and find the key below. Create the following values, as most of these values will not already exist you will need to create them by clicking on Edit -> New -> DWORD or String Value and then set the value as shown below. DefaultTTL = "128" (String Value) Specifies the default time to live (TTL) for TCP/IP packets. The default is 32. DefaultRcvWindow = "372300" (String Value) Specifies the default receive window advertised by the TCP/IP stack. The default is 8192. PMTUBlackHoleDetect = "0" (String Value) Specifies whether the stack will attempt to detect Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) routers that do not send back ICMP fragmentation-needed messages. The default is 0. PMTUDiscovery = "1" (String Value) Specifies whether the TCP/IP stack will attempt to perform path MTU discovery as specified in RFC 1191. The default is 1. SackOpts = "1" (String Value) Enables support for selective acknowledgements as documented by Request for Comment (RFC) 2018. Default is 0. Tcp1323Opts = "3" (DWORD Value) Controls RFC 1323 time stamps and window scaling options. Possible values are: "0" = disable RFC 1323 options, "1" = window scale enabled only, "2" = time stamps enabled only and "3" = both options enabled. To increase performance even further follow the instructions here and increase the MaxMTU to 1500. Exit your registry and restart Windows for the change to take effect. That ought to confuse a few people. :)

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I have an RCN cable modem and varys time to time. Make sure you back up your registry or do a sceencapture of your settings before trying to "tweak" your network or you will really be in the shitter! Don't forget all the cable modem is a single high speed connection line to the internet, like a big pipeline= the more users at the same time will tend to slow down the data passing thru... another good connection speed test site is http://msn.zdnet.com/partners/msn/bandwidth/speedtest50.htm I am just another accident waiting for a place to happen!
