By EMILY GEST Daily News Staff Writer controversial new study by a Columbia University professor claims highly motivated gays can become straight. The explosive conclusion clashes with the view held by major mental health officials, who say sexual orientation is fixed and so-called reparative therapy may actually be harmful. Dr. Robert Spitzer, the psychiatry professor at Columbia who led the study, is scheduled to unveil his findings today in New Orleans at a meeting of the American Psychiatric Association. Spitzer said he cannot estimate what percentage of homosexuals can change their sexual orientation if they try hard enough. But he said the research "shows some people can change from gay to straight, and we ought to acknowledge that." Even before Spitzer's official presentation today, gay rights activists and other critics quickly attacked the findings. They claimed that many of the 200 "ex-gays" who Spitzer said participated in the study were referred by religious groups that condemn homosexuality. "It's specious to pack a study with folks who have gone through extensive therapeutic psychotherapy by religious ministries," said Cathy Renna, news media director for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. "It's very clear he has no proof whether participants were honest." "The sample is terrible — totally tainted, totally unrepresentative of the gay and lesbian community," said David Elliot, a spokesman for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in Washington. Psychologist Douglas Haldeman, who is on the clinical faculty of the University of Washington, said there is no credible scientific evidence that suggests sexual orientation can be changed, "and this study doesn't prove that, either." Dr. Hillel Swiller, clinical professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, said, "There's no reason to attempt to convert" people who are gay. Spitzer, who spearheaded the American Psychological Association's 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, said the research was paid for from his department's funds. He said he conducted telephone interviews with 200 people, 143 of them men, who claimed they had changed their orientation from gay to heterosexual. | Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | The people that the study says have gone straight were mostly referred by religous orginizations that condemn homosexuality. They didn't have proof that those people were gay at any point. Of the others I suspect that they felt social pressure or descrimination and are leading straight lives so they are not viewed as different. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I don't see that happening because dolphins and humans are the only species that can have pleasurbable sex so the only purpose of sex is to mate for almost all mammals.
