O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | June 11, 2001 -- Wolf whistles, video cameras - and, yet again, sick gropers - greeted women at yesterday's raucous Puerto Rican Day Parade. Police said at least seven women reported being victims of sex attacks along the packed parade route, although the isolated incidents were nothing like last year's debacle, in which 50 women were groped and harassed during booze-fueled, post-parade partying in Central Park. Three men were arrested for the alleged sex assaults: Carlos Marquez, 31, of Queens, for allegedly sexually abusing a 20-year-old woman; Vere Hunte, 19, of The Bronx, for allegedly grabbing a 17-year-old, and Jesus Rojas, a 40-year-old homeless man, who police charged attacked a 37-year-old woman. Cops had no immediate information about the other four cases. Other arrests included six for disorderly conduct or resisting arrest, 55 for driving motorcycles without a license, one for driving a stolen motorcycle and one for assaulting a cop. The officer was not seriously hurt. Cops handed out 140 summonses for motorcycle-related incidents, such as driving too fast. Still, nothing appeared to dampen the jammin' mood along Fifth Avenue, where hundreds of thousands paraded their pride draped in red, white and blue, while music blared, politicians schmoozed and protests over Vieques continued. "It's a good time," said Jezmarie Aponte, 20, as she balanced her 2-year-old son on her hip. "Guys are always whistling, but they whistle whether you're at the Puerto Rican parade or somewhere else, whether you're wearing sweats or shorts." A scantily clad Stephanie Campos, 17, who came to the parade with pals, brushed off as harmless the pack of 20 guys following them up Sixth Avenue with cameras. Giggling as she jiggled to the catcalls of her admirers, Campos posed for the cameras, saying, "It's all fun." But "when they touch us, they're getting out of line," she said. William Ventro, 23, of Staten Island, was busy taking photos of the girls. "I came to celebrate and not cause any trouble," he said. Politicians used the event to greet some of the city's 800,000-strong Puerto Rican community. One of the most popular with the crowd was Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, whose appearance drew wild cheers and honking. Hunky singer Marc Anthony wooed the crowd from a flashy red Thunderbird, as cops fought to keep screaming female fans from jumping the police barriers to get at him. TV personality Geraldo Rivera, who is Puerto Rican, marched the route holding a sign reading, "Peace for Vieques." The addition of 1,500 cops over last year's 4,000 - and a booze ban - appeared to deter crime. After the parade ended, a rowdy crowd of revelers, some of them throwing objects of roofs, gathered in the South Bronx. There were about 30 arrests, but no injuries were reported.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | OK, here's a little rant from me...quote: If you know the way you dress is going to cause a stir, then DON'T BE SURPRISED if something happens or gets out of line! I'm not trying to take the "well, they ask for it, so it's ok" stance, but knowing full well of what happened last year, you would think people would be a lot more concerned with their appearance based on the situation! I love scantily-clad women, make no mistake about it, but I'm not about to grope and jump any of them (unless invited to LOL). Most parades are going to have assholes attend, thats a given - but why provoke an already hot situation?? Thats just my two cents....
