(I smell a Fezatorial coming on tomorrow) Wednesday June 27 8:46 PM ET Comedian Paula Poundstone Arrested LOS ANGELES (AP) - Standup comedian Paula Poundstone was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony lewd acts upon a child and child endangerment, the district attorney's office said. Poundstone, 41, was charged with three counts of committing a lewd act on a girl under the age of 14. She also was charged with endangering another girl and two boys, according to a statement by Deputy District Attorney Gina Satriano. The comedian was arrested in Malibu by Santa Monica police and is being held on $200,000 bail. Messages left for Poundstone's publicist, manager and an agent were not immediately returned Wednesday. The brassy comic, known for her one-liners about politics and the human condition, has been a frequent guest on late-night talk shows over the years and is a regular panelist on the syndicated game show ``To Tell the Truth.'' The single mother of two daughters also starred in the ``Home Movies'' television show. | ||||

According to authorities, a felony warrant was served on Poundstone shortly after 3 p.m. in Malibu. Santa Monica police took the 41-year-old into custody and detained her at the Santa Monica Jail for several hours. She was released around 7 p.m. after posting $200,000 bail. The comic and sometime panelist on the television show "To Tell the Truth" looked a little dazed and tired as she left the jail facility. A gaggle of reporters met Poundstone and her attorney as they stepped outside. "She is adamant that she is not guilty of any of these charges," defense attorney Steven Cron said. "We are confident that when all the facts come out, we’ll be able to prove that she’s innocent of all these charges." Poundstone is the single parent of two adopted girls. According to reports, she’s been a foster mother to as many as eight children since 1993. Some of her standup routines, ironically, have been about child-rearing. It’s not certain whether Poundstone’s own children are named as alleged victims in this case; the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office lists the victims as "Jane" or "John" Does in the four-page criminal complaint against Poundstone. At the time of her arrest, "Ms. Poundstone was charged with three acts of lewd conduct on a child -- a girl under the age of 14," district attorney's office spokeswoman Jane Robinson said Wednesday. "She was also charged with child endangerment on two additional girls and two boys." Robinson refused to elaborate on the nature of the charges, except to say that if convicted the suspect could get up to 13 years in prison. Poundstone was generally silent Wednesday and referred most questions to her attorney. Asked how she was treated in jail, Poundstone replied, "Very well. I’ve never been in there before." She also said that she has "faith that the truth is the right thing." Cron said that he was dismayed by law enforcement’s decision to arrest his client. "We are shocked," he said. "We’ve been cooperating with the police department. We’ve been aware of the investigation. "They know where Paula has been and there certainly was no reason for them to go out and arrest her. "We’ve tried to be as cooperative as possible." According to reports, Santa Monica police and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services have been investigating Poundstone for some time. The comedienne has appeared periodically on such shows as A&E’s "An Evening at the Improv," as well as the HBO Comedy Hour. She recently left the ABC show "To Tell the Truth" after an apparent dispute over money.
