The PDP women's caucus spokeswoman Alhaja Ali-Balogun said the protest would go ahead unless the party's southwest national vice-chairman Olabode George and other officials apologized "for the "unwarranted evil they have visited on our women." "If they refuse to apologize we are prepared to protest by walking the streets of Lagos naked and camping in our nudity in front of Commodore Bode George's house for seven days," the spokeswoman was quoted as saying in Vanguard newspaper. Ali-Balogun said women's caucus members were angry because some of their members were arrested for protesting over the presence at a national seminar of a senior PDP official who had been suspended from office. In Nigeria displays of public nudity by older women, who are considered "mothers of the nation," are regarded as a national taboo. Women last paraded topless in Lagos in protest after the late military ruler Sani Abacha arrested the winner of the annulled 1993 presidential elections, Moshood Abiola.
