And we thought hospitals were safe.

Hospital Nightmare
Boy, 6, Killed in Freak MRI Accident

V A L H A L L A, N.Y., July 31 — A 6-year-old boy undergoing an MRI exam was killed when the machine's powerful magnet pulled a metal oxygen tank through the air, fracturing his skull.

Officials at the Westchester Medical Center said the tank had been brought into the exam room accidentally Friday morning after the boy, Michael Colombini, of Croton-on-Hudson, was already in the magnetic imaging machine and the 10-ton electromagnet was switched on.
The oxygen tank was "immediately magnetized and drawn to the center of the machine, causing head trauma to the child," the medical center said in a news release.

The county medical examiner's office said Colombini died Sunday of blunt force trauma, a fractured skull and bruised brain.

Boy Sedated at Time of Accident

The boy, who had undergone surgery before the MRI exam, was sedated when he was struck, the hospital said. The nature of his surgery was not being released out of sensitivity for his family, medical center officials said.

"The trauma was due to what can only be described as a horrific accident and the entire medical center is grieving," said Edward Stolzenberg, president and chief executive officer of the medical center.

He said the hospital assumes full responsibility and "will do anything it can to ease the family's grief."

Hospital, Health Dept. Investigating

The medical center and state Health Department were investigating. A Health Department team was at the hospital on Monday, checking records and interviewing staffers to see if there were any violations, department spokesman Robert Kenny said.

Medical center officials would not say who brought the oxygen tank into the MRI area.

An MRI generates images of the body using an electromagnet, radio waves and a computer. It is used in the diagnosis of many diseases, including brain tumors, spinal disorders and heart disease. It is considered nearly risk-free.

The Westchester Medical Center, with four hospitals and six other centers 15 miles north of New York City, is a major transplant center and has recently ventured into robot surgery.

Let me preface this by saying that I have nothing but sympathy for the boy and his family, this was a complete accident and a real tragedy.

That being said, yes, hospitals are really that safe. This is a really freakish thing caused by the fact that hospitals are run by people and people make mistakes. Sometimes their mistakes have deadly consequences, but this was just a very stupid mistake.

I don't think that hospitals or MRI's are less safe because of this. MRI scans help to diagnose many problems and thus save tens of thousands of lives a year, and the publicity of a horrible accident like this really only serves to scare people. It's like people saying air bags aren't safe when they save thousands of lives a year.

Ah...I've been getting all preachy lately, I have to stop...getting lightheaded from the thin air up on this soapbox

Your mind won't let you say that you want me
Your mind won't ever, never let you have what you want
I feel your hunger to taste me
Still your mind won't ever let you say
Your kind is just the type that should use me
But your mind won't seem to let you have
The opportunity to abuse me, abuse me
Your mind won't even let you feel

savor the affliction, savor me

There's a true story about a woman being killed by a new x-ray machine. The attendant pushed the button to put the machine in stand-by. The machine went through it's routine including lowering the several hundred pound x-ray machine onto the table the woman was laying on. The attendant didn't know what had happened because he was in that little shielded room. The woman's chest was crushed by the machine. Ever since, all x-ray machines "rest" three feet ABOVE the table.

Thank god it seems like this kid was pretty well medicated and probably didn't know what was happening. I hope he died quickly and didn't suffer too much....just imagine how his family must feel, the kid survives the surgery but doesn't make it out of the MRI....

The problem with hospital work is if you fuck up someone dies or gets hurt. Generally everyone I work with is pretty consciencious and responsible, but I've seen some horrific screw-ups with devestating results. The key as a patient is to educate yourself as much as possible, ask questions about everything, and if something doesn't seem right don't be afraid to refuse treatment until your questions get cleared up.

As an EMT, I have seen the results of stupidity far more in the world than in the hospital. Generally speaking, hospital staff who have paitent care responsibility are on the ball most of the time. It's the idiots who don't care for others that you have to look out for.
