I just finished watching the James Dean biopic on TNT, it's been a while since i have thought about it. But in my life i was always mystified by James Dean and for reasons that would take me hours to explain he has been a great inspiration in my life cause of the closeness in his life and mine. He was always a huge inspiration to me since i was about 7 or 8 when i first saw East of Eden on wpix channel 11 in new york one afternoon.

We all have someone or a number of people who have inspired us now a relative is more of a given. Now as far as me since i never had a father nor was my mother there much in my childhood and i had no siblings my grandmother provided much inspiration.

But who inspired you emtionally, mentally in your life?

For me it was James Dean there have been other's who touched me on a different level as far as their lives such as john lennon, genghis khan but James Dean was always a constant in my life as far as an idol.

I don't know if I've ever had a hero or someone that's affected me greatly but I've always felt some sort of strange admiration for Lenny Bruce since he encompasses so much of what I think about- Social commentary, hypocracy in the world, governmental bullshit, freedom of speech, warrantless persecution.

EDIT: He also was one of the first modern martyrs of the 1st Amendment.

Well, my family is my main source of inspiration, but i do have some idols...however mostly in sports, like Phil Simms, John Starks, Vince Lombardi, etc. for different reasons. Starks because he started out with nothing, worked his ass off to get to he NBA, and now that he has something, he gives back to the people who have nothing now. Phil Simms because he is a perfect example of what happens when you try 100% every time you do something. You might not always be sucessful, but you will know that you did your bbest. And Vince Lombardi because he was the ultimate motivator, and i strive to be a combo of all of these things.

"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out, in a good cause, and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." -Vince Lombardi

"90% of baseball is mental, the other half is physical." - Yogi Berra

I would have to say that I have always looked up to Jimi Hendrix. Ever since I was a kid, the first time my step father played me "The Wind Cry's Mary" I fell in love with his music and his life. For some reason its not so much him as it is his music that gets me threw life. There is not a single situation that I have not gone threw that there was not a Hendrix tune that I could not listen to and gather my thoughts.

As far as relatives I would have to say my step father, even though we did not get along at all, He has made me the man I am today, and I will always be thankful to him for that.

All I was saying is that my Uncle charlie inspired me because he killed 42 gooks in the 'nam, which is ironic considering his name. Another person that has inspired me is you gonzo, for coming out of the closet like that. The bravery that you've shown against social norms is really rare in this day and age, but, though I am flattered, I like women. Like you mom.
Actually, someone that has inspired me, though fictional, is Batman. He's the pinnacle of human achievement. He has tought me that any situation can be overcome by thinking it through, any adversary can be defeated by planning ahead and that a violent psychosis is always a plus.

I don't know... many people I suppose.

My aunt for raising my ass for some time

My grandmother for epitomising ((spelled wrong)) the whole "Angry Irish Catholic" woman that one day I may become... with less church-going, and more drinking.

My best bud Jessicka... for being the ass who got me outta trouble during the druggie years... RIP my chickie.

My dad inspires me for what NOT to be in life.

I guess that's it... there's probably many more that I can't think of at the moment.

Definitely my Great Grandmother who passed away this past February (RIP YiaYia Katerini) She lived in Greece for about 80 years of her life, so I only knew her for about 5 but she was such a srong woman. My great grandfather used to beat her and she actually got a divorce in Greece in like the 40's which was unheard of back then, and then lived by herself raising her daughter in a small town and taking care of most people in the town. She has survived War, famine, abuse and poverty, and I admire her for it.

I don't have any true heros. I can name people who I have respect for: Walter Payton, Ayn Rand, Frank Zappa, Michael Jordan. But ultimately, they were all imperfect in their own ways. I just don't put people on pedestals.

EDIT: 2 (two) additions. Ted Nugent, and Henry Rollins.

Stevie Ray Vaughan is my inspiration. HE had such passion and love for music and his guitar, that he used to play until his fingers would bleed, then he would crazy glue the cuts shut and keep on playing. He also was man enough to commit to a rehab after puking blood and finally realizing that he was going to die if he didn't get his shit together..he got his shit together, but then he was killed in a helicopter crash. His music is what inspires me and also the strength that he had as an individual...

Who inspired me let's see...

My bro' Greg: he taught me that hard work and compassion to others can lead you toward success.

My Dad: despite his bad fashion sense, and his terminal shyness, he taught me about humility and what some people will do to show how much they care for another.

My Mom: sure she gets on my nerves sometimes, but she means well and taught me happiness is a product of a lifetime of overcoming misfourtions.

Kurt Vonnegut: By reading his books, he helped me see a world outside of the frame and assured me that it's okay to have "crazy ideas" sometimes.

Lance Armstrong: as an athlete like him, I learned you can overcome anything(even cancer) with hope and busting your ass. And that there is no such thing as being "gifted", a great athlete/person is just being an average guy, who is dedicated, courageous, and unwilling to throw in the towell, despite criticism.

Mrs. Cooper (5th grade teacher): She gave me detention at least twice a week, even made me cry a couple times. But I thank her, she taught me about responsibility, priorites, and how important getting an education is in life.

Lastly, Lester from "American Beauty": He taught how to raise my middle finger to people who try to step all over me. Also he let me know that I am not obligated to live a shitty, redundant life. That I am able to rebound, or change my situation, even if others say it too late.

On a personal level, my Dad. He just did all the right things when he needed to. Always respected, always fair, always consistant, always there when I needed him.

On a public figure level, Bobby Kennedy. Bucked the odds, challenged much that was wrong whether it was popular to challenge it or not stayed his course, payed the ultimate price. His negotiating skills were superior.

I'd have to say that my mother has been a huge source of inspiration for me. A single mother who grew up in Detroit and Queens, ran away from an abusive household, became a single mother who managed to raise two very well-adjusted children while working two jobs. She shows me that I can do whatever I want with my life as long as I don't feel sorry for myself or get complacent.

Also, I am always driven by people like Niels Bohr and Nicola Tesla. For those of you who don't know, they are great scientists of the early 1900's. These two theorized so much of what we know about modern physics, all by time they were 30 years old. I strive to do as much as can now, not wait until I'm older. They remind me to live as though I may die tomorrow, but learn as though I will live forever

As far as public figures, Madonna has inspired me the most. She does what she wants to, doesn't worry about what others may think and is a strong person.
On a personal level, two very close people to me, Chris and Joe. They were both killed in separate car accidents, so I feel like I'm living life for them, and I try to have as much fun as possible, because that's how they always were

Many musicians inpire me to write and perform music and express myself. People like Adam Jones, Axl Rose, Rob Zombie, Eddie Vedder and (King of them All) Trent Reznor are the top musicians I follow and idolize. Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorcese inspire me to write stories and screenplays. As funny as it sounds, Mick Foley inspires me to be a funny and kind Long Islander. I am still a clone of my father. We share the same love of foods, politics, and hot celebrities. He's always treated me like an adult and as an individual. He busts his ass every day and has done that for decades. I will always look up to him, and my mother as well. My father has given me words of wisdom that I live by every day of my life:

"A single word of kindness is worth more than a speech full of wisdom."

I am more inspired to not make the same mistakes as others do. My real mother, for example: I breathed a sigh of relief when I turned 19 and was not pregnant (I was born when my mother was 18)-- history does sometimes tend to repeat itself...
And then you have my parents...my mom is a tough old Irish lady from the South Bronx, I only wish I could be as strong as her. However, my parents wrote the book on what not to do in life. And there's no way in hell I will end up like they have! That's my biggest motivation.

As far as "famous people" Janis is my main inspiration, as well as Queens of the Stone Age for not following any trend and doing their own thing. Hunter S. Thompson, Edgar Allen Poe, and Aldous Huxley

I'm sorry I forgot to watch the James Dean movie, but I'm sure they'll replay it. For the record, East of Eden was my favorite movie of his, as far as acting went...beautiful movie!

If it is someone who inspired me, then hands down my older brother (R.I.P. Jason). He was only 17 when he passed from cancer but he accomplished so many things in such a short amount of time. He overcame huge obstacles and impairments (Cancer, blindness). And in his short life he touched the lives of so many of his peers. No matter many times I'd say that I hated him, deep down inside I loved him with all my heart. I wanted to be like him and make an impact like his. The world has lost a great person in my brother. And I still miss him very much.
As for idols, I'd have to go with the classical composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Bach, Mozart, Schubert etc. They made me the musician and history buff I am today.
