O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Mr. Brownstone and I were talking and decided to try out vegetarianism for a month...see how it goes and possibly change our eating habits for good. I was wondering who if anyone was a vegetarian on the board and if they could reccomend things and places to eat to avoid eating only chocolate and like chips....thanks. why do I say I'm fine when it's obvious I'm not? why's it so hard to tell you what I want? why can't you just read my mind?

O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00 | I once had a run-in with some hard-core vegans. They were outside of a McDonalds I was leaving with signs saying "Meat is Murder" and "Don't Eat Something That Has A Face". I walked up to one and asked why he was doing it. He said he couldn't live with other animals being killed for the benefit of humans, that we should be above other creatures which need to kill animals in order to survive. So I looked down, then looked him in the eye and said "Nice leather boots, ass." Then I walked away while he stumbled for his words OK, I just wanted to tell that story. While I don't personally agree with vegan-ism, I can tell you what to try, my mother is vegitarian because she says most meat prducts make her a little queasy. One thing, no one under the age of 20 or so should eliminate meat from their diet. That protien is very necessary for proper growth and all that jazz. OK, some stuff you can eat that doesn't taste like crap: Vegitarian chili with lots of beans. This is actually what I thought chili was until I was about 15. Lots of kidney beans, chick peas, things like that. It's good protein and is damn tasty. Rice and beans. That's right, those pesky latinos are onto something there. The rice and the beans provide a bunch of the amino acids you need that you usually get from meat products. If you are going to have salads, don't use iceberg lettuce, try Romaine and some of the others. More flavor and better for you. Also, there are thousands of types of tomatoes, not just the usual beefstake looking ones we are used to. Find one you like Steamed vegtables taste much better than boiled ones, and they have more vitamins in them If you're in a pinch for food that you used to remember, there is always pizza. Popcorn makes a great non-chips snack That's just a few, there are cookbooks dedicated to this though. I can levitate birds. No one cares.

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 01 | Becareful. Vegetarianism can be very unhealthy. Make sure you keep your protein intake up as well as take a multivitamin w/ iron. Lots of essential nutrients (ones that the body must GET and doenst produce) comes from animals. Keep that in mind. "these grits are off the hook yo!"

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Dec. 00 | FMFB - being a vegetarian has it's ups and downs. Just make sure that you find a protein substitute. Beans and soy products work well for friends of mine that are vegetarians. BTW - check your mail. Into each person's life a little pain must fall. I'm just here to administer it.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | well, here's my story: (if ya care) i was vegetarian from the age of 12 to 19. my parents totally supported me, and made special meals for me. for 7 years i was totally strict, everything had to be cooked seperately from meat, and i checked ingredients because a lot of seemingly vegetarian things contain chicken stock and stuff. then i went to college, and was basically on a diet of pasta and rice, the only time i had protein is if we went out for breakfast after a long night of, well, whatever debauchery it was that night. so, basically i was totally unhealthy, and what with the peer pressure and the munchies i fell off the wagon. i went straight to eating burgers and all kinds of crap, and yet for some reason i never got sick. i'd like to go back to being a vegetarian, but i don't really have the time or money so, i still eat chicken once in a while, and well, if i'm really fucked up you might even get me to eat a whitecastle burger, ich. anyway, as far as food goes, gardenburger brand vegiburgers are pretty good, they have a nice variety of flavours if you can find them in the store, boca burgers are disgusting. in my experience, most things that are pretending to be meat, are bad. you wanna look for things made for vegetarians, rather than things aimed at people who are trying to lower their cholesteral or whatever, but you have to experiment. anyway, i think i should quit rambling now, have a nice day, and good luck. oh, ps. my parents still don't know that i'm not vegetarian, and i feel totally guilty because of the effort they put forth for my benefit, any advice? An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come. --Victor Hugo regardless of my status, i am a nice person. no really, i am, i swear;) crack hitler belongs to me :)

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | for a great place to eat out, try Veggie Heaven, im not sure of either of you are in northern nj but, there is one in Teneck and another is in Parsippany (or it may be Troy Hills..im not sure) it's not very easy at first to become a vegetarian, so good luck to you both if you've heard this one before the one where i surprise you by showing up at your front door saying 'let's not ask what's next, or how, or why' i am leaving in the morning so let's not be shy...

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I was also a vegetarian for a while until I started to get unhealthy. I ate a mix of fruits and veggies (I was more vegan than anything) but because it was so, I also had to experiment a lot. For example, boiling certain veggies together with a soy based sauce. Unfortunately, it cost a lot of money. Many people don't realize that not eating meat may actually cost you more than eating it. Also, as previously mentioned, I started to get really sick, even though I took a multi-vitamin every day. My iron and protein was at an all time low (which isn't too good because I'm "pre-anemic").quote: Dubinsk is right. Vegetarianism is a good way to go but it isn't necessarily as healthy as it may seem. It also takes a lot of work. Hope it works for you guys! Good luck!
