Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | Stick with it Amy. Learning on a stickshift is the way to go. You'll be thankful in the long run. I learned on an automatic and it took me 6 years to learn to drive stick. The minute I had gotten my permit my father told me to drive all over the place. I was so nervous. Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | My first time driving was basically quite difficult. My dad just sat next to me, while I was clueless and said "OK, drive". I figured out everything for myself and did it all well. Fortunately, it was an automatic. Learning on a stick is extremely dificult and unnecessary unless you go to Europe. The only good thing about it is that once you learn, you don't forget. It's like riding a bycicle. My goal is actually to learn to drive a stick.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I had no problems - go figure ;) Did drivers ed in high school and all the instructor said was "Let's Go". Learned to drive in Manhattan, so taxi drivers don't intimidate me. I had the least amount of time behind the wheel than anyone else in the class because he couldn't believe how well I took to driving. Automatic has to be easier, with a manual the new driver has way too much to try to deal with.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | lol my first experience driving was fun, I had to learn on my dad's mercedes. Yeah no pressure there...lol and my dad had so much confidence in me with his hand oh about 3 inches from the wheel at all times. But after the paranoia wore off and I got used to the steering wheel (thing is so huge it feels like you are driving a bus) It was quite easy. I really want to learn how to drive stick though, because i want my next car to be stick so i can race...yes i have a need for speed...lol just popped a bottle of NOS Fuel Additive in my car...very nicey nice. Psychopath Registered: Aug. 01 | taking drivers ed last yr, my first time driving, pretty much ever, was in pouring rain. i was in the car with 3 other friends and we were all pussys. the first time is weird getting use to the gas and all, and it was automatic. when i first drove with my dad, like after one driving lesson, he let me drive to my friends house, again in the pouring rain. i made a 10 minute ride last about a 1/2. quote: damn i was scared just driving on the 'busy' streets of staten island. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | my first driving experience was in an old VW bug that a friend had. It was more like a trail car, considering we pnly ever drove it off-road... anyway, I was like 14-15... The Bug had a broken accellerator pedal, so in order to use the gas he had a cable rigged up that you had to pull in order to get it to go... this made things very interesting, considering it also had a clutch & 4 speed... ahhh the memories of driving that beast... Actual first time on the road I was 16 & was in Dad's 76 Pontiac Gran Prix (quite a change from the bug) with a 400 under the hood... Dad just thru his cigarette pack on the dashboard... everytime i made the pack move (from going to fast in a turn or braking to quick) he's slapp me upside my head... i learned quick... Professional Slacker I should get paid for this crap...

Psychopath Registered: May. 01 | My first time driving...hmmm. This is kind of embarrassing. The driver's ed instructor told me, "Go ahead, turn the key," but I had no idea how far to turn it or how long to hold it in position. I was terrified. Luckily, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. My mom was cool too, she took me to an empty parking lot and made me do donuts and drive in reverse a lot. Not sure what that all was for! LOL. I've never learned how to drive a stick. Some day I will, but the person who teaches me will have to tell me what to and then go far, far away. I want no witnesses! Anyway, relax Amy, it will definitely get easier and you will get more comfortable. Gotta feel sorry for the poor instructors though, no? :) Thanks to Brokenjaw for my pic (again)!

Psychopath Registered: Apr. 01 | Congrats on getting your permit Amy! I personally think automatic is a LOT easier to learn on. Learning to drive stick shift is hard but it makes it even harder if you're just learning how to drive too... there's so much to think about. Only a little over a month until I get my permit :) and then I have to wait two fucking years to get my license because of that new law. How much does that suck? Anyway, good luck Amy! tired moments into pleasure. Say the word and we'll be well upon our way. Thanks to Sephiroth for the sig pic!

O&A Board Regular Registered: May. 00 | It took three tries before I finally got my license in June of 99. Amy, a word of advice is to learn how to parallel park, the right of way and how to stay under the speed limit. You don't want to speed up during a road test. What are the rules for teens like you to get a license in NJ? In NY you have to get your permit, then your junior's license (only can drive to and from school & work), and then when you are 18 you get your full senior's license. (i was lucky to be 18 at the time to get my senior license right away!) --Lent, the poster formerly known as Rowelentless-- Ignore the women in the sigpic, I'm a 20 year old guy who just loves teens.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | lent, that is a complicated question.for people like amy(born before 84(at least i think 84 is the cutoff))you can get a permit at 16, then full driving at 17.but in the case of people like me and teenslut, we get a permit at 16, then at 17 our permit becomes a special license that can only be used between 6AM and midnight, and you can only drive with one non-family member in the car.then at 18 we get full driving privledges last time, the insects got me, but
