Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | There are folders on your computer that Microsoft has tried hard to keep secret. Within these folders you will find two major things: Microsoft Internet Explorer has been logging all of the sites you have ever visited -- even after you've cleared your cache, and Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express has been logging all of your e-mail correspondence -- even after you've erased them from your trash bin. (This also includes all incoming and outgoing e-mail attachments.) And believe me, that's not even the half of it. When I say these files are hidden well, I really mean it. If you don't have any knowledge of DOS, then don't plan on finding these files on your own. I say this because some of these files/folders won't be displayed in Windows Explorer at all -- only DOS. (Even after you have enabled Windows Explorer to "view all files.") And to top it off, the only way to find them in DOS is if you knew the exact location of them. Basically, what I'm saying is if you didn't know the files existed, then the chances of you running across them is slim to slimmer. To give you an example of how sneaky this is, there are some hidden folders that may contain your name, address, phone, all the sites you've visited, every single e-mail you've sent/received, every attachment you've ever sent/ received, everything you've searched for in a search engine, every filename you've downloaded, names of documents containing "sensitive" information, copies of all your cookies, full readable e-mail from your hotmail account, your PGP keys, and more. well duzn't that just suck cock? to read the rest of the article and to find out how to remove these hidden files, go to http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml Guns don't kill people...dangerous minorities do. If you use MSIE, and hit the drop-down on the Address bar, it is THAT list of URLs. The *.mbx files are your mail folders if you use Outlook Express. Go ahead and delete them if you want to get rid of every email in your box. And I'm not talking about stuff that's been deleted. Only what's in it now. The CONTENT.IE5 subfolders contain your internet cache. Yeah, of course you'll find all the things you've been looking at - what, do you think you view them right on the web? No, any picture, any ANYTHING is saved into this temporary folder. There is a limit on how big this folder can get in your Internet Explorer properties - once the cahce reaches this limit, it starts deleting from the oldest file. IE probably cached the file on HIS computer because HE probably typed it in his Explorer address bar to find the thing. Again he goes over the MBX files.... as I said, this is just where Outlook Express stores its shit. Did he think it's stored on his ISP's server? FindFast really is useless though. Otherwise this guy is just completely full of bullshit. Me droogies: HydratedPeach is siiiiingin' in the rain. Syndra has graduated and will one day take on droogs of her own. One position available. Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | And I'm sure XP does as much as it can to prevent you from using third party products. In theory, having the first Windows that is completely crash-free is great. In practice however, Microsoft will find a way to screw it up.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | Considering that IE 6 doesn't include JAVA (Hey, weren't they sued over that before?!?!?), I think XP is one more step in Microsoft's big evil plan to control the internet. Oh, by the way, did you know that XP stops working if you upgrade your PC? It thinks you have installed it on another machine, thus breaking the terms of slavery, er... service agreement. You have to contact MS to get a code to get your PC to work again. DasDoomper

Under old copyright law this would have been illegal but now under the DMCA(Digital Millenium Copyright Act) it is perfectly legal for them to take away fair use. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: Second. 2000 is the first. quote: This is true, but probably not as bad as you think. Microsoft's claim is that you'd have to upgrade probably about 3 things at once to need to re-register. This is because of XP's lovely annoyance called a Hardware ID. When you register XP, it takes your 25-digit Product Code (what we're all used to), and combines it with your Hardware ID, which I believe is another 25 digits. It takes those two and sends them to Microsoft (that is, if you do it over the internet. Otherwise, you have to READ it to them over the PHONE)... Microsoft then sends you back your Registration code, which I believe is 42 digits. So if you change hardware, your hardware ID changes, and that's why it thinks you're on a new computer, and bitches at you. But re-registering over the internet shouldn't be too big a deal. Better make sure you have a net connection though...
