O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I have a cable modem. From what I have heard, its the same signal feed that goes into the converter box so you can watch programs. Before I was married, the TV was right next to the PC, so watching and being online was a breeze. Fast forward to married life - the 2 TV's we have are in other rooms. To run another feed to another TV in this apartment is trouble. can I just slap in a TV tuner card on my PC, split the cable line thats feeding my modem, and run one of the split lines to the tuner card? I realize that I wouldn't be able to watch any scrambled channels, but I can always hook up a box in a pinch if I need to and run that to the tuner card. I'm more concerned as to whether the feed is splittable without causing harm to the cable modem. I've run multiple lines before, just not one leading from the PC. Has anyone here done this or thinks is plausible? I've got two open seats. Email me here or AIM me at Organic999 to apply!!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 | I think that if you split the line to the modem, you lose some of the signal and the modem might cut out sometimes. (It happened to me...i lost my connection for a week...it turned out that the line was split 4 times outside my house, and the cable guys came and ran a direct line to my modem.) you should try it, because i dont think that one splicing would do much harm I am Chuck's wasted time. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I didn't even think of the signal loss to my modem, The split would be a total of 4 inches from where it is now, so I don't think I would lose much (if any) signal. I'll give it a shot though, sucks not being able to watch and bullshit on the board LOL. I've got two open seats. Email me here or AIM me at Organic999 to apply!!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 01 | i've heard it is possible. ive also heard that since it is a cable line to your comp. the scrambled channels wont be scrambled anymore if its in your t.v. im no expert though so dont take my word for it. O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 | quote: I think it is just the actual splicing of the line that affects the signal, not the distance, but like RVD, im no expert. I think it will work though. it is only one split I am Chuck's wasted time. My grandmother always said, "Why buy the cow, when you can get the sex for free."

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I have 2 cable boxes and a cable modem. There is a chance that you might get a weaker signal (happened to me). What I wound up doing was buying a signal/gain booster from Radio Shack (under $30.00 - I think). This also acts as a signal splitter. My cable modem works like a charm now. The feed for programs and internet access are actually on different pairs of wires within the cable. Hope this helps

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I also have 2 boxes and a modem right now - and I have no complaints with the speed I'm getting on it (DSL Reports tests give me glaring thumbs up). My concern is that if I split the signal at the line near the modem, will it interrupt the modem in any way? the split will be less than 5 inches, basically running the cable modem feed into a 2 way splitter, then pairing off the two ends to the modem and to a tuner card. I also have a signal booster I bought for my TV for other reasons, and I don't use it (since it didn't cure my problem with the TV - something else did), but its the cheapie version - its not a splitter, just a booster. I'll play around with it. Thanks for the input everyone, really appreciate it! I've got two open seats. Email me here or AIM me at Organic999 to apply!!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | As has been said, Cablevision recommends independant cable to modem. My modem is 10 feet from a TV, and when they did install they ran separate cable back to the main line. Could you do it? probably. Should you do it? that is a different question. Optimum on line degrades as it is; I'd leave it alone.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Just bitch to them and have them install another line. We complained enough, and they eventually Hard-Wired a dedicated line from the street straight into my bedroom. And look for my old thread in OT about Hacking your Cable Modem for more speed.

I kept hearing people on my phone-line, and whenever they got caught in my line and I was online, I got dumped off, and couldn't reconnect until they finished their call. Verizon came out and gave me a new line after a few complaints. quote: I did - thats why DSL Reports gave me such a glowing report on my speed tests :) :) Kudos to you for that info. Once I decide on a Tuner card, I'll actually start playing around - I have no idea what a good card is, so I'm gonna start researching that tonight - any suggestions? O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: HUMMM...I also have an A/B switch. Here is my set up - main cable line into the house going directly into the gain booster (since it is a line splitter) 1 line goes into the modem, 1 line goes to the A/B switch (could use a 2-way splitter too). Since my TV and computer are on opposite sides of the room - I had to make a RJ-45 cable (you can buy it also, but I have the tools at home to make custom lengths). The 2 box setup allows me to watch one cable show while taping another one. Hope this helps
