O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Ok I've had Verizon for over a year now and I have finally gotten tired of their constant shit. Sure it's ok for browsing but downloading huge files is such a fucking bitch and let's not forget the spontaneous disconnects. I've had lots of good things about Earthlink and was wondering if anybody has had good/bad experiences with it? BTW Cable is still unavailable in my town(they said last year they would get it by december 2000, didn't believe them at the time I was dead right). Psychopath Registered: Nov. 00 | i got earthlink dial-up. I time out sometimes but not too often. I connect at about 46,000bk (i got a cheap ass modem). But ping on online games like tfc is always good (for a 56ker). It is 21.95 a month, or you can get cable from them for 41.95 a month and no contract (it is coming to the ny area in a month or so), or you can get dsl st 49.95 a month for a 1 year contract (but you get 2 months free) so it comes out to be 41.95 a month. As for the dial-up I think you can get a free month and try it out. So give it a shot

Hanger-On Registered: Oct. 00 | I have Mindspring (same company now) and have no probs with it. Dialup on 24 hours usually. Yes they have cable and DSL but not over here. They also have satellite but it's something ridiculous like 150 installation 600 dish and 70 a month. i think they have an offer to knock off like 250, but it's still too much. 28800 isn't too bad

Psychopath Registered: Sep. 00 | Ive had Earthlink for dial-up for almost my whole internet lifetime and they are probably the best you can get for dial-up. And Cablevision pisses me off. (I cant get DSL in my apartment so cable is my only hope). I called them fucking late 1998 and they said cable modems would be available early 1999. I called them again around September 2000 and they gave me a date.... April 1st 2001. I guess they where fucking with me cause thats April Fool's Day and to this day cable modems are still not available. Every month i go to the Wiz to ask them if its available and they always say in a few weeks it will be.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | My friend had Earthlink before he (and I) got RoadRunner, and he never had a complaint about it other then the download speed - but it was dialup, so he dealt with it. I would go ahead and give it a test run, see how it is. I considered it once, but I'm one of the few people who never really had a problem with AOL - especially when you get it for free :) Cementbag has enrolled in Goatweed University, but I've got one open seat left! O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Earthlink is offering about 3 times the speed of Verizon and free sign-up with a modem(even though I have one, but hey it's free) and the first two months are free. So if you average it out to a year it would cost 42 bucks a month(pretty much Verizon rates.) Looks very interesting. Psychopath Registered: May. 01 | I perfer dsl over cable, because it takes hours to upload things. Because cable only sends information, but it doesn't send it back to the server. it information sent back to the server is sent by telephone lines at 36.6 kbps. dsl is like 256 kbps/512 kbps. depending on what you choose. Unfortunatly the only good DSL provider is verizon. my friend has verizon and he almost never gets disconnected. Thanx to Austin 3:16,and jerichoholic1. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Actually two-way cable is working. Most users have a 128k upload. Verizon caps the upload at 90k. I think Earthlink has a 384 u/l speed. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | OK Masturbator I've got earthlink DSL provisioned through Verizon. I get around 1250 down/81 up. To get the super whammy earthlink (385 up) you need to have your service provisioned through Covad. When I signed up for Earthlink, I was provisioned and connected in 2 weeks, that's right 2 weeks. Not the standard 1 month. You'll get the same equipment as verizon. The only time I was done for a significant amount of time (read over 15 min) happened after the WTC attacks. I was down until the Sunday after. 6 mos till your first serious outage, that's pretty impressive. If you can get OOL, go for it. If not, EL is a pretty good way to go compared to @home, Road Runner, and RCN. Had Earthlink since march, no complaints (except for maybe Upload. It's kind of hard to run a web/ftp server on 81kbps up) I hope he tells us to burn our pants...these things are driving me nuts! Hold on there maestro, there's a "New" Mexico? O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 00 | quote: quote: DSL A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection probably represents the best bang for the buck for small-business operators, presuming the service is offered in your area and that your phone lines can qualify for installation of the service. Once you have a provider in mind, you can contact it to find out if your business location supports the installation of a DSL capable phone line. If you qualify as DSL-capable, the next concern is your business's distance from your central office (CO) as the maximum speed of your DSL connection is proportional to how far away you are from the CO serving you. Covad.net TeleSpeed Business Class DSL service lists its limitations as follows: TeleSpeed 1.5S 1,5Mbps 1.5Mbps ~1.3 miles TeleSpeed 1.1 1.1Mbps 1.1Mbps ~2.3 miles TeleSpeed 768 768Kbps 768Kbps ~2.3 miles TeleSpeed 384 384Kbps 384Kbps ~2.8 miles TeleSpeed 192 192Kbps 192Kbps ~2.8 miles TeleSpeed 144 144Kbps 144Kbps ~7.7 miles As you can see, the maximum speed available to you drops as your distance from the CO increases. You have the largest range of bandwidth to choose from if you are less than two miles from your CO. Pricing for DSL services ranges from $149 per month (for 144Kbps service) to $419 per month (for 1.5Mbps service). Keep in mind that these prices are for business-class DSL services. If you are running a one- or two-person operation out of a home office, you might be able to get residential DSL service for somewhere between $49 per month and $79 per month. Because a 1.5Mbps DSL connection is the same bandwidth as a T1 connection for less than half the cost of a T1 in most places, DSL has become quite popular with small businesses. Be aware, however, that a lot of DSL providers are merely reselling service actually provided by somebody else. If their upstream provider goes under, you could find yourself completely cut off from the Internet. The recent failure on the East Coast of DSL provider NorthPoint demonstrates just how catastrophic such a provider failure can be. There are still companies trying to get reconnected to the Internet as I write this, even though it is several months after NorthPoint's failure. Covad has announced that it is facing some financial difficulties in the upcoming year. While it isn't in danger of going away immediately, you would be wise to monitor Covad closely. In short, be sure you know who really is providing your bandwidth, and keep an eye on their fiscal health. The complete Strike up the Bandwith article.
