First, know your history...

Back in the mid-90's, some of you may remember a third competitor in the CPU war, called Cyrix.

If so, you may also remember the point at which Cyrix died a horrible death, and the processor line that led to it.

This was the line of processors to challenge Intel's higher-speed Pentiums and low Pentium-MMX chips. It was the Cyrix 6x86 - now, do you remember the clock speed? The super geeks like myself do.... Cyrix had a fancy way to get around things, by calling it:

"6x86 166+ at 133MHz"

What did this mean? In Cyrix sales-speak, this meant the processor had the PERFORMANCE of a 166, but the actual clock speed was 133. Remember, this was when there was a MAJOR, noticeable speed difference between the two.

So when Cyrix duped everyone, they just kinda went to hell, faded into obscurity...

So now you say to yourself.... FTL, ENOUGH WITH THE HISTORY LESSON, WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH AMD??

Keep your pants on, you impatient fuck. I'll tell you.

AMD has recently released their new line of processors: The Athlon XP series.

Something intrigued me. At first. The clock speeds were listed as "1800+, 1700+, 1600+..." and on down the road. My initial intrigue, however, bumped into my history lesson, causing me to think "uh oh".

Further investigation of their site led me to find exactly what I was afraid of. Their lovely benchmarks all listed the processor as "Athlon XP 1800+*". What was the star for?

Down the page, I found the star.

"QuantiSpeed architecture operates at 1.533 GHz."

They're pulling the Cyrix shit! Why? Just because they can't compete with Intel's 2GHz? Yeah, probably....

That's pretty pathetic that a company would do that. Doesn't affect me though, so, may i be the first to say....CARE? ;)

Why would you want to email me?

Doesnt matter what you call it the fact is that they make a better chip that is simple to overclock, which = more gooder then intel

Well, QuickStop, remember... if it doesn't affect you, then you don't buy their stuff, therefore it already affects them....

And who knows if this chip can be overclocked - of course the manufacturer would not recommend nor support overclocking, so we'll have to wait until silly people buy them.

Gotta figure that anything optimized for XP has to be evil.

Processors are still better than Intel and a
hell of a lot cheaper.

I heard AMD's reasoning for doing this - they are trying to tell the consumer that Mhz numbers mean jack-shit when it comes to efficiency in a CPU. They are basically saying Intel tells people that a 2 Ghz chip is better than AMD's 1.33 Ghz simply because it is faster in clock speed. That may or may not be true, but AMD insists that most of their chips are indeed more efficient than Intel chips, but Intel always gets the consumer "nod" because people see higher or faster numbers, and they instantly think "better".

Yep, that's what they're doing - but it's funny that the WAY they have to do it is to pad the numbers anyway. They can't just say "Our 1.533GHz out-performs their 1.8" because they KNOW people will just look at numbers... so they have to call their 1.533 an "1800+".

Also - it's a widely known fact that early P4's, up to 1.8GHz, didn't even out-perform the highest PIII's. Intel just wanted to get the big clock speeds onto the market, and only now with the bigger chips are they putting up the real performance numbers - note that AMD didn't try to compare to the 2GHz.

Edit - I forgot... Intel also uses a 400MHz bus and 800MHz RAM as opposed to AMD's 266MHz bus... it does make a difference.

There's a little company out there that practically invented the personal computer industry that has been doing a similar thing for years. Remember Apple? I do (I'm using my old PowerMac 7600 right now).

Apple has said for years, and has proven by using Intel's own tests, that the Motorola 750 (G3) and 7400 (G4) are approximately Twice as fast as a comparable PII or PIII/P4, respectively, at double the clock speed. Meaning...

G4 @ 867Mhz ---> PIII/P4 @ 1.67Ghz (1666Mhz)
G3 @ 1Ghz (fastest made by IBM) ---> PII @ 2Ghz (if Intel ever made one)

AMD is pretty much doing the same thing, though Mr. Jobs and the crew in Cupertino have shown that consumers really don't give a shit about tests results, thay want raw numbers and bigger is always more gooder in Joe Bagadonuts' eyes.

lights down, you up and die.

Benchmarks mean dick. They are usually customized by the manufacturer to make their chips look better than whatever competitor they are up against. In a few years, we'll have clockless processors, and Mhz won't be an issue.

k people... I fully understand where AMD is coming from.

Last July I attended MacWorld Expo. I sat in on the keynote as well as some of the developer courses. At the keynote, Apple Senior VP of Hardware Jon Rubinstein gave a wonderful speech about the 'Megahertz Myth'. You can watch the entire thing right HERE.

Hope that helps...

Yea, well I'd be hostile too, if I owned the BetaMax of Computers, LOL I mean sure they are a better machine, but does anyone in the real world care, other than Computer Graphic Artists? Or maybe gamers?:);):)

Now, if your responses to my little jokes get too technical, I will have to send in my 14 year old adolescentjerkoff friend to take care of things. Kinda like a tagteam match.

However, be forwarned, if a tag team match ensues, Fez will probably move this to the Wrestling Forum.
