O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | 2 hours of play, and all I have to say about Devil May cry is WOW!!! It's obvious similarity in structure to the Resident Evil Series certainly doesn't take away from this games' definite uniqueness. I mean, sure, it's set in an eerie castle infested by evil, and in order to progress you have to fight off those hoardes, and solve puzzles to advance further into the labyrinth of rooms. The visuals have a distinctive gothic/horror feel to them, and so far are truly impressive, much as the RE series are. But from what I've seen so far, that's where the two diverge. Resident Evil has always had a strong emphasis on puzzle solving and uncovering the twists and turns of the plotline, whereas combat was more a matter purely of survival. Devil May Cry, however, appears to go the opposite route. Granted, so far I'm only into the third mission, and while there's definitely a storyline, a good one too, it doesn't appear to be so much a machiavelian mystery as RE, and the puzzles so far certainly aren't as complex. But the combat.. DEAR GOD the combat!! It seems to be a cross between Soul Reaver and Vagrant story, a real time combat system much like Soul Reaver, where you just walk up and attack, no selection or anything, but a variety of attacks and combination attacks similar to Vagrant, all based on button timing and controller placement like a fighting game. And the combos! Hit an oponent in the air with your sword, then switch to your twin handguns and rapid fire, juggling them while they're still in the air and causing more damage, or jump up and unload, letting your guns keep you floating in the air as you fire. But here's the kicker... obviously you don't start out with the max arsenal, Dante (the main character's name and I'm sure a reference to the Divine Comedy) can acquire a shotgun, needle gun, grenade shotgun, and plasma gun as additional firepower, as well as a sword and pair of gauntlets that allow him to tap the darker side of his ancestry (Dante is half devil), Dante can also unlock powers and moves with his demonic weaponry. He does this by spending Red Orbs, acquired by defeating foes. The trick is, the flashier and more sustained the attacks you use, the more red orbs you get, the more powers and moves you buy, the flashier and more sustained your attacks can be. But, if you REALLY want a good reason to buy a game, look at it this way. I am a full time gamer... how many OTHER games have a sat down and written something about? Besides, I'm sure a few other folks will comment and agree with me.. trust me this one is worth the investment from what I've seen so far. Hell.. I've allready got a wicked case of Atari thumb...... O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 01 | I have not had the great pleasure of playing the full game yet, but, I did play the demo packed with RE:CV, and god, was it amazing. The combos were spectacular. Double jump off the wall, a few shots to the enemy, and then slice 'em in half. this game rocks. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Quickstop.. yeah, I checked pretty thoroughly for a thread after playing this game last night, and I saw the demo thread. But with how good this game is, and remembering the huste and bustle everyone made about it based on the ads, I was amazed that no one had allready started a thread. I've been itching to get done with work just to go home and play, I haven't been this hooked on just playing a game to PLAY (as oppossed to solve) since Tony Hawk 2. But, knowing what's due out the end of this month beginning of next.. I get the distinct impression that this game is something like a preview to what sort of games we can expect for the christmas season, Dear god... as if I didn't allready have a non existent social life.. my ROOMMATE won't even know I exist lmao!!
