O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I have the Linksys router w/integrated 4-port hub. Dependsing on your cable provider it can work right out of the damn box. Another good thing about it is you can put in a computer name and workgroup/domain. Sounds useless first but some companies (like mine... Comcast) provide you with a computer name. So *if* my computer were hooked up like they want (cable modem directly to computer), my computer would have to have THEIR stupid name. With this, the router has their name in it, and the computers on my network can have their own names. All the admin screens are web-based, and the router defaults itself to 192.168.1.1.... as long as your computer is set to grab an IP automatically, the router will be your DHCP server. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I've been using the linksys for over a year. Only problem I've ever had is with some online games. Otherwise it is fairly invisible. It does act like a firewall, although it doesn't mean you are immune to everything. If you go to Gibson Research they have a few free utilities, documents, etc which show your vulnerability or lack thereof.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | quote: OK, a firewall is pretty much like it sounds - a "wall" around your computer that keeps other computers from accesssing your computer. A "port" is like a door in the wall that has a security guard standing watch. Information that is suppose to be leaving or being received by your computer passes through these "doors". When they do, the firewall's "security guards" recognize information that is being sent and collected. It determines if the information is actually suppose to be sent or recieved, and it lets it pass through the port if you have given it permission to do so. If you haven't given it permission to be sent or received, your computer will usually inform you (in the case of a software router) and ask you what you want to do. If you open ports 1-9999, you are basically telling the firewall to let all internet traffic come and go though any port without being questioned by the firewall. IMO, not a good idea if you have another computer hooked up and running to the router. Just make sure it's off when you open up all the ports. DasDoomper
