Retail Data Show Microsoft Xbox Is Best-Selling Video Game Console After First Two Weeks
December 04, 2001 5:27:00 PM ET

Attach Rate for Xbox Launch Is Highest Ever; Weekly Shipments of Xbox Systems Ensures Strong Sales Through Holiday Season

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ The Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft Corp. MSFT had the best-selling video game console launch on record after two weeks of sales, according to The NPD Group Inc., the definitive source for sales and market data on the video game industry.

"The data clearly show that Xbox is off to a torrid start," said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer at Microsoft. "Xbox sold out as soon as we launched, and we're selling systems as fast as we can produce them. More than 100,000 units a week are being delivered to retailers, so game players are likely to find Xbox systems throughout the holiday season. With one of the best launch lineups ever, I understand why Xbox is the most sought-after gift for the holiday."

Most importantly, Xbox purchasers can't get enough of the Xbox launch games. According to The NPD Group, gamers are buying 2.4 Xbox games with every Xbox, resulting in the highest game attach rate ever recorded for a console at launch. Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. sold 1.9 games with every PlayStation 2 during the first two weeks of its launch last year, and Nintendo Company Ltd. has sold 1.9 games with every GameCube to date.

"Halo(TM)" from Microsoft was the best-selling launch title according to actual NPD data, beating "Luigi's Mansion," the top-selling GameCube game. "Halo," the critically acclaimed sci-fi action game, also recently received a 10 out of 10 rating from the editors at Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine. Sales are also very strong for Microsoft "Project Gotham Racing(TM)," "NFL(TM) Fever 2002," and third-party games such as "Dead or Alive 3(TM)" from Tecmo, "Madden NFL(TM) 2002" from Electronic Arts and "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater(TM) 2x" from Activision Inc.

"There's no doubt that Xbox has some of the most popular games for the holiday," said Ed Fries, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. "Whether you crave action, sports, racing or fighting games, Xbox has killer games in every category."

Being that you are an impartial poster in this thread you have gall to accuse. :) I mean it is usually a smart idea to take numbers from an independant group that the whole industry uses like NDP (see below)and make up the numbers you use in a press release with the Groups' information.

News Article: Nintendo Gamecube selling at rate of 27 per minute

News Date: 12/03/2001
Source: Nintendo of America
Link: http://www.nintendo.com

According to Nintendo of America, the Gamecube is selling at an extremely high rate.

KA-CHING! NINTENDO GAMECUBE Selling Nonstop At Rate of 27 Per Minute

Retailers Report 600,000 Sold in First Two Weeks

REDMOND, Wash.--Dec. 3, 2001--Nintendo of America reported today that, based on direct communications with its retailers, its new NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) home video game console has reached sales of nearly 600,000 units in America in 15 days, or an average of 27 per minute -- nonstop -- since its November 18th introduction.
"Both in terms of total units sold to date and even more so in the comparative number of units we're selling per day, NINTENDO GAMECUBE's advantages in game quality and affordability are being amply demonstrated in stores across America," says Peter Main, executive vice president sales and marketing, Nintendo of America. "In short, although launching at retail three days following the Microsoft X-box, it seems apparent that we have sold through to consumers more game consoles than they have even been able to deliver to retail outlets."
Because Microsoft has declined to estimate its actual consumer sales numbers, no fully accurate picture of comparative market activity is yet available. That data won't be available until The NPD Group releases its full projected sales report for the month of November in the next few weeks. For example, NPD's sample does not reflect system sales at Wal-Mart, the nation's largest retailer, and also the largest retail outlet for NINTENDO GAMECUBE.
The current available TRSTS retail data is just a snapshot. Only when NPD can project sales from all retailers -- even those outside their store sample -- can they reach an accurate picture of what's really happening in the market.
A dedicated game play system, NINTENDO GAMECUBE delivers new forms of interactive fun for players and offers the easiest development environment for game creators. The system's embedded memory, proprietary optical disc and innovative controller were designed to optimize the game play experience. Nintendo GameCube is available in two colors: Jet (black) and Indigo (violet) for a suggested retail price of $199.95.

As the worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co. Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy, Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM). Since the release of its first home video game system in 1985, Nintendo has sold more than 1.4 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.
For more information on Nintendo products, visit the company's Web site, www.nintendo.com or www.nintendogamecube.com.

kinda interesting that all Nintendo press releases come out of Redmond also... Microsoft prolly secretly owns NoA ;)

and like the article says, we have to wait til The NPD Group releases its full projected sales report before ANYONE can claim victory.

Food for thought from "Impartial" writers

David Carnoy - Executive editor
To Xbox or not to Xbox--that is the question torturing many gamers' minds these days. The GameCube? Well, Trix are for kids, and so is the 'Cube, dude. But the Xbox is beefy, brawny, and versatile. And I want one. Why? Not because the launch titles look solid; I think we're still a year away from anything truly impressive. But because, as every gaming fanatic knows, you somehow won't feel complete until you have one, even if you already own a PS2.

My prediction: More people will own multiple systems--and they should. Heck, they're only $300, and there are plenty of ways to rationalize away a mere $300. You buy less software--so what? The point is that you'll just buy the primo titles for each system. So I say to Mr. Colin Duwe, PS2 owner and Xbox fan, you will break down, my friend, you will break down. It's just a matter of time.

Darren Gladstone - Senior editor
Ah, David, I wish I too could afford every game system known to man and buy only the best games. Then again, given my salary, I wish a beautiful millionairess would bankroll my gaming habit. Look, these are lean times, and we're forced to make a choice: one system or the other.

Let's not pussyfoot around the matter. The PS2 has a year's head start and beats everyone else in the sheer number of quality games currently available. What about the Xbox? Spare me any lame, blue-screen-of-death-in-my-home-theater joke, and don't bash me for selling out to Microsoft. The game system is rock solid in size, shape, and launch titles. Then there's the GameCube. It's cute, tiny, and powerful, and it has a couple of games that everybody will enjoy. The "killer apps" may be few and far between at launch, but its $100-cheaper price tag makes it a whole lot more tempting to parents.

Ultimately what's going to sell any system is the games. And based upon the launch titles, I like what I'm seeing for the Xbox. In fact, I've invited friends over and showed them every cool game for every system and they agree--the Xbox is worth the money. And we're stacking first-generation Xbox games against second-generation PS2 titles. Wait a year, then we'll talk.

Matthew Elliott - Senior associate editor
For me, it's really all about one thing: sports. Football, baseball, basketball, and hockey--the four pillars of American leisure time--from the backyard to the blacktop to my TV. After playing Microsoft's NFL Fever 2002 on the Xbox, Madden 2000 on my PS1 just doesn't cut it anymore. NFL Fever looked so good and is such a blast to play that I don't think I'll be able to wait for the Xbox's first price drop.

I'm bound to spend more, though. After playing Halo and Dead or Alive 3, I'm going to have to have those, as well. But that's it! Sheesh, I'm starting to sound like Steve Martin in The Jerk: "The ashtray, this paddle game, and the remote control...and the lamp...and that's all I need." Speaking of remote controls, I'm a little annoyed that I have to shell out $30 for an Xbox clicker. But I think my wife will be sold on the idea since we're in the market for a DVD player anyhow. At least I don't need that for the PS2.

With a year's head start, the PS2 can boast of more available games than the Xbox. But look at another set of numbers--the specs for the Xbox and PS2--and you'll see that the Xbox is a bigger, badder box. Since I care only about sports games, I'm looking forward to the system's basketball and baseball games next. As for the GameCube, I don't want to spend $250 just to play Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (that's the only game I really dig for it).

Colin Duwe - Associate editor
After playing a bunch of Xbox games (especially Halo, NFL Fever, and Cel Damage), I'm pretty impressed. Right off the bat, there are a bunch of really fun games that look fabulous. It has taken a year for PS2 games to get to where the Xbox games are now. So the future of the Xbox looks good, and I recommend it to gamers who don't already own a PS2. But with all the great PS2 titles out right now, owners of that system should allocate their gaming budgets for software, not new hardware. And the Xbox will likely never have Gran Turismo, so I'll stick with the PS2.

Nintendo needs to get its software in order. The three games I've seen haven't thrilled me. I doubt they'd keep even an eight-year-old engrossed for more than a few hours. Parents should pick up a Dreamcast or the original PlayStation if they're looking for an inexpensive game machine with a good library of kid-friendly titles this holiday season. Hopefully by the early part of 2002, the GameCube will have enough good games to justify its purchase.

IM is right, the most impartial are the editorials...the other "articles" you posted were most likely press releases sent by the pr firms of Nintendo and MS. PR is free advertising, and if a release is well-written, most lazy editors will put it in the paper exactly as its written. How do you think newspapers get most of their copy?

Impartial Review of all Game Consoles

Gamecube: "the Gamecube will come in a wide range of colors, from "FAGOT BLUE" to "FAGOT PINK" to "FAGOT GREY" to satisfy all teh fagots in teh worald. it is a vary large consoul and si teh size of a cat! And teh hardware is vary slow too, becuase Nintendo still uses radio transistars and metal glue to make there parts. BUT nobodey cares becuase Nintendo markets their games to 3 year olds and now 30 year old perverts who want to play "VIRTUAL DONKEY BALLS 7""

X-Box: "so Bill saw that peopal were geting rich from makeing consoules so he saids, "okay, we will makes aconsoule thats liek a computar machene!" and he went to his computar machene and ripped all teh parts out and threw them into a plastic box and lit it on fire and screamed "HERES MY CONSOULE NOW!!!" and made teh engineers make moer. So instead of haveing consoule parts insides a consoule, teh Ex Box has COMPUTAR MACHENE parts inside it, witch means yuo can get viruses and "PASS THES EMALE TO 500 PEOPAL FOR GOOD LUCK"."

Conclusion: "WHAT YUO SHOULD BUY!

YUO SHOULDANT BUY ANY CONSOULS YUO SHOULD BUY A COMPUTAR MACHENE BECUASE CONSOULES ARE FOR FAGOTS AND SO ARE IMACS!!!!!!!!"

Well you do have people like me who can't afford to buy 3 consoles.

I think the most impartial review is average people. They know better usually. x-Box has good games but they will be out for PC so it just isn't worth it for me. Neither is Gamecube. But that could change within a year's time.

Ultimately what's going to sell any system is the games

Here is the statement that rings most true. You don't buy an X-Box or a PS2 to show off the console next to your TV. You don't buy a Gamecube to match the color of your furniture. You buy it to play games - period. Whichever has the best games (play-wise or graphic-wise or both) is the one that will come out on top. Right now PS2 is in the lead gaming-wise simply because it been out over a year and simply has a higher volume of titles. X-Box and GC are the new guys so they lag on software but kick-ass in actual power and performance. Anyone (like myself) who is looking to buy a console and doesn't already have one has to make their choice based on these facts. For people that already have a console (ie PS2), chances are they'll stay loyal to it or get an X-Box/GC or both assuming they can afford it.

I would like to get an X-Box, but right now I'm more concerned with maxing out my computer - it may cost a little more than an X-Box now, but I'll have a much larger library of games to play, and eventually I can get an X-Box for the cool "X-Box" exclusive games down the road. Plus, I'd like to hear more unbiased reviews from actual gamers regarding playability, response times, graphic issues (if any) in regards to the X-Box. I know what it packs on paper, but I want to hear what real gamers have to say about it before I buy one.

Don't get me started on this. And btw, your post sounds like an ad for x-box with your *cough* sources. Horny, my friend, you put it beautifully

GAMES, NOT SPECS. Period.

And these articles provided by companies and some gaming sites? Wipe your ass with them. That's mostly what they're worth. A lot of companies go to most magazines and sites, throw money in their face with the game and say, 'Be nice'. So take everything with a grain of salt and realize this is a business... you make money, sell games, or your company fails and dies. I've talked to much... I don't want to rant.

As powerful as X-Box is and as fun my friends tell me Super Smash Brothers Melee is for the Gamecube, I'm all about the Playstation 2. X-Box doesn't spark my interest and at least the Gamecube is going to have Zelda and Resident Evil games. But all I need in this world is Metal Gear Solid 2, Tony Hawk 3, GTA3 and Silent Hill 2 for the PS2. Holy shit, a lot of kick-ass sequels are out there.

The only reason it beat PS2 is because PS2 only had about 300,000 units on America (toys r us had 50 units). While x-box had about 2 million. i doesn't mean its better it just means more were available at that time.

Hey I got one for Christmas and I didn't have to buy it either - the wife got it. But, thats the same thing, isn't it? Since we are married, its the same bank account? Not if the sales girl didn't ring it up and only rang up Halo - Went to Target over the weekend just to get some small gifts for the wife's teachers, saw the X-Box, wife said lets get it, the counter gorl couldn't ring it up then her register went apeshit, she got it back only to charge us for Halo! Bagged the console and the game and wished us a Happy Holiday (Obviously she didn't realize she didn't scan the console). Suffice it to say the wife and I made a B-Line for the car. Merry Christmas to Goatweed, and a special thanks to Target for hiring such reliable staff :) And yes this is a true story - two co-workers didn't believe me, and they've been trying to get it for their kids for months - one guy plunked down over $500 for a bundle because his kid wanted it so bad :)
