Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I have been looking to upgrade my video card for a while, and now I'm actually going to do it but I am not exactly sure what to get. I have a dell with a ATI-Rage 128 pro 32MB(I think) and was thinking about getting the VOODOO 5500 64MB AGP-OEM. But I have no idea what to look for. So I figured I'd post and see if any of you gaming nuts had any recommendations. "Some folks trust to reason others trust to might, I don't trust to nothin', but I know it comes out right."

Psychopath Registered: Nov. 00 | The hottest selling (at least at CompUSA) is the NVidia Geforce 3 Ti500 with the ATI radeon 8500 in a close second. Both cards retail at just over $300.00 but boast some of the best graphics abilities out there. Check out the reviews on CNet or ZDnet and those should give you an idea of what to buy. Personally I recommend the Geforce 3. No sig pic due to the fact that I am an idiot for not keeping a copy of my sig pic and because the assholes at @home unplugged everyone without warning and did not let anyone retrieve their files from their server. I have the Ti500 and it smokes. The Ti200 is a great card too and can be overclocked. Either way go with an Nvidia chipset, you can't go wrong. You can reach me through AIM or email. Psychopath Registered: Sep. 00 | When hasn't NVIDIA been good? NVidia chips in the past where generaly faster then 3dfx's. It doesnt matter anyway, 3dfx is history and the two major chips left are NVidia and ATI. And Nvidia benchmarks faster. Plus the new Geforce4 is gonna have 128 megs of ram, thats crazy. EDIT: Just checked pricewatch.com and Voodoo5s are about 95 bucks. So I think voodoo 5s are the best budget video card you can get actually.

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | Thanks for the info guys. I think I'm going to go with the NVidia Geforce 3 Ti500. The only thing is in some of the reviews people state that they have trouble with it over-heating. Have any of you who have the card had that problem? O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I haven't noticed any kind of overheating - its actually cooler to the touch than my GF2 MX board was. It might get hot if you overclock the hell out of it, in which case just put a bigger fan on it (in lieu of the fan that comes on the card). You can get fans pretty cheap at Staples or local comp. shows. You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00 | OK, I went to buy the G-force 3 Ti 500. It had a AGP connection. Even though my computer is only 1 year old, it only has PCI connections at the ports. Are there comparable cards with PCI? Does adding a AGP port require a new motherboard, or am I just fucked? Psychopath Registered: Sep. 00 | Don't know if there are any good PCI cards but if you want an AGP slot that would require a new motherboard. And if your gonna do that you might as well wait for an NForce which will have a geforce2 built in.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Painter, what kind of a machine do you have? My Dell is 3 years old and it has an AGP slot - and I also have a Ti500 card (it fuckin' rocks by the way). If you're absolutely sure you don't have an AGP port, you will need a new MoBo - but you can get those relatively cheap online if you know what kind of a board you want, and its really just a swapping of the two boards (plus a few tweaks here and there). You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Question, related to this topic. What's more gooder, a GF4 MX 420-440 or a GF3 Ti? I would think the GF4 because it's a later release chipset but I've seen it priced cheaper than the GF3Ti in many places. I wouldn't be willing to spend more than $150 on a 3d card(related to my discussion on getting a barebones system in my other thread). I'm too lazy to make a sig. AIM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Sep. 00 | Pics a little fuzzy, a little to close I guess. All slot are the same. The 2 cards in there are phone, and ethernet. They came with the machine. When I got the AGP card the connections were further back (towards the front of the machine) than these slots are. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Nice pic Painter - it looks like you don't have an AGP port, those all look like PCI slots (though on my machine the PCI's are black and look much longer...) In any event, the only vid card you can go with is a PCI based card, but I really don't know a specific one to reccomend you - and as far as I know GeForce 3's and up only come in an AGP flavor. GF2's might come PCI, look into those. You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!

Presario 5BW284 model comes with Intel Whitney chipset Integrated Graphics and does not have AGP slot to upgrade AGP Graphics card. This model has two PCI slots open for expansion, you can install PCI Graphics card. _________________________________________________________________ Fucking Compaq. No AGP port.
