Question for all you gamers...My PC struggles to run the newer games, Madden 2002, etc. Now my comp is only a 400 mhz AMDK62 but I only have an ATI All-inWonder(Rage128) 16 meg card. Would a 64 meg video card(say a geforce2mx400 for arguments sake) compensate for the lack of processor speed enough to run a game like Madden effectively or am I just shit out of luck? I also have 256 megs of ram. Any input will be appreciated.

Yeah, it's not too bad with anything other than games though. Can't afford a new PC right now it sucks. Speaking of, anyone know a good site selling cheap barebones systems? That's about all I need along with a new video card to have a decent system again.

You can surf the internet with that?

And with this card you can even get 16 colors?

Seriously though, you should probably think about upgrading both. Most of the new games out there are "REQUIRING" a 300 mhz machine with at least a 16mb video card. This is the Minimum requirement and is what will allow the game to start up. However it is going to be choppy as hell. The recommended system right now would probably be a PIII 750, Geforce2 32 or 64mb, and at least 256mb ram if not 512.

I don't know much about AMD processors, but I'm getting the impression from the replies here that your processor is really old. If thats the case, you might want to look into upping your motherboard as well. Or at the very least, see what max speed processor your current chipset can handle. It might cost a little more now, but a new board and processor combo would probably add a lot more flexibility for you down the road - not to mention making the games your'e currently playing run super fast.

Also, how much RAM are you packing? If you're using SDRAM (like I still am) you can get huge amounts for dirt cheap prices (I just bout 3 dimms of 256 meg each for a total of about $100 from Crucial). RAM is always good for 3D gaming, and would react well with a faster #D card as well.

Processor speed is key in gaming as well, but like I said, your board may only go so high since its old, and to max it out now might only be a temporary solution as chip speeds get faster by the month - causing game designers to require higher hardware requirements. Its never practical to go top-of-the-line (unless you can always afford to), but it pays off to stay as close to the curve as you can without bursting your wallet.

If you're not sure about what components to buy (brand wise, etc.) a good place to read reviews is Tom's hardware. As for prices, I like to use Pricewatch. I'm also a big fan of buying parts at local computer shows that are held in schools or expo centers, but I wouldn't walk blindly into one of those and buy what the dealers will "reccommend". If you know what you want and a few tables there have it, you can usually haggle them down on price (which is usually less that what it goes for in a store, online or otherwise).

Most important aspect to upgrading - whether its just RAM or a complete overhaul - is research. Read up on what other people have, learn how hard it is to do whatever upgrade you want to do, then look into price and availablility. A smart PC shopper is a happy PC gamer/user. :)

Thanks for the links. Maybe I'll check out a computer show if it's not at some obscene time in the morning. There's always one going on at the Meadowlands it seems.

How much were you looking to spend on a machine? Dell sells machines that are refurbished for great prices.

(Refurbished simply means that someone returned the machine and Dell stripped it down, ran a battery of tests on it and repackaged it - it comes with a full warranty).

You could get things like a P4 1.6Ghz machine with 256mb of RAM, 40GB HD and a 32mb card for $530-$550. Pretty damned good price.

I'm always disgusted by how cheap PCs are getting! (Only because I routinely remember buying machines like 486-33's for $3000!)
