Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I've checked for threads and there doesnt seem to be anything in the past 3 months so.....What's the deal with the PS2 modem? I heard it was supposed to be out in Jan 2002, but that obviously didnt happen and I can't seem to find any news on when they're planning on releasing it. Anyone have an estimated release date? This thing is going to be fucking awesome when it finally comes out, just to play my old college friends in madden and nba again.

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 02 | I have no clue when it is going to come out, but it is in the works. This will really push the gaming systems into the new era. They always had their draw backs from computer games and not being able to play online was a big one. Does anyone remember the modem for one of the nintendo systems??? it didn't really catch on, but it was really cool. Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Sony to launch online PlayStation 2 in August By Ben Berkowitz, Reuters, 03/07/02 Analysts had expected Sony to launch the online service, a long-time goal for the company since the $299 PS2 launched in Nov. 2000. Sony said it will begin testing the games this month. The PlayStation 2 does not have built-in network capabilities but does have other high-speed expansion ports. The company said it will begin selling a network adapter for $39.99. in August. That adapter will have ports for both a dial-up modem and a broadband connection, allowing both low- and high-speed access. Sony did not say if the adapter will plug into one of the PS2's two USB ports, or if it will slide into a larger port on the back that can also accommodate a hard drive. Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O) launched its new Xbox console in November with a built-in Ethernet port and the software giant has said it would begin to roll out online services this year. The adapter bundle will come with a start-up disk pre-configured for a number of major ISPs, including EarthLink Inc. (ELNK.O) and SBC Communications Inc. (SBC.N), though Sony said any ISP can be used with the service. The only console online gaming service currently offered in the U.S. is one for Sega Corp.'s (7964.T) now-discontinued Dreamcast console. The Dreamcast had a dial-up modem built in; a broadband adapter released later was largely unsuccessful. With Sony's announcement, the only major console in the U.S. market without any online options is Nintendo Co. Ltd's (7974.OS) GameCube. The $199 GameCube, released in November, has no built-in access ports, and Nintendo has said little about its online plans. http://digitalmass.boston.com/news/2002/03/07/playstation.html

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote:I've done dial-up and broadband gaming, and broadband is the clear winner. I can see why Sony would include both )as oppossed to the X-Box only supplying broadband connectivity) to not exclude the majority of people online that still dial-in, but how good can the gaming be? I remember playing QIII on dialup and hating all the goddamn lag when one or two many people bright a shitty ping with them onto the server. Hell, I still get laggy on my cable modem from time to time (but nowhere near as bad as I used to with Earthlink Dialup). Does anyone know how these networks are going to work? Example, I have an X-Box, and I also have Roadrunner Broadband. So, if any ISP will work, can I just plug the natwork line into my X-Box, load a strt-up disc, and play munti-player Halo for hours on end? Or will it be subscriber based (translation - additional cost on-top-of ISP cost). If they do charge, I hope its a nominal-fee, and not some crazy amount (like $19.99/month), because as it is now you can play some X-Box titles online for free with a Hub and a Broadband line. You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna chat.

Hanger-On Registered: Mar. 02 | All indications are you just plug your existing connection in and you're ready to go. As for fees they're probably going to operate like PC games, peer to peer games are free Massive multi player games are probably going to have a monthly fee (I mean they gotta maintain and upgrade servers so it's understandable)
