I know this is certainly a loaded and heated question. I've always wondered just which is better. As far as first person shooters go, if you have a kickass computer there doesn't seem to be any question it will graphically play better on a computer. At the same time, a game like Grand Theft Auto 3 woud suck ass on any computer. I understand most strictly console games are made to be played from at least a few feet away, while computer games are to be appreciated up close.

I've finally decided, after much questioning and pondering, that playing a game on a console is just much better in this day and age.

Case in point, a few nights ago my roomate brought home his new computer. This thing is a monster. 19 Inch Sony flatscreen, 256 game card, etc etc. He starts playing Urban Terror and CounterStrike on it. No lag, some of the crispest graphics I've ever seen. Basically, he spent about 2200 dollars on a gaming machine, utilizing a lot of technical mumbo jumbo I don't understand.

Now my other roomates and I are all amazed at how great this is. For about a half hour. We took turns on his, then I pulled out my old Quake 3 and Half-Life CDs with the hopes of hooking my LapTop up. I install them, and realize just what hell it is to play PC games. Update this, download this, move this here, etc. etc. When I was done, they ran like complete shit. Now MOHAA runs ok on this, but I'm sure it'd be much better on his desktop.

So I go to BestBuy to see how I can soup this up. The plan was to find the stuff there, and order it cheaper online. To boost my laptop, or so the guy says, I'd need to spend about a thousand dollars in ram and video cards just to get it on par with my roomate's comp. Online money, I could probably get it for 800.

Fuck that. Fuck playing on a subpar machine. Fuck downloading updates and joining file subscibers. Fuck worrying about virus'. Here's what I'm gonna do with that 1000, and I think it will be much better spent.
1. 50 toward DEUS EX on Ps2 when it arrives in March.

2. 50 on State of Emergency this week.

3. 70 on the Gameshark/modchip package at modchip.com.

4. 300 on a new receiver so I don't have to lug my Dolby Digital set-up from home to school.

5. 300 on an X-BOX because as good as PS2 is, two consoles is always better than one.

6. 50 on Halo, cause it fucks counterstrike right in it's ass.

7. 80 on the Ps2 hard drive when it comes out, plus about another 100 for a year's service to play it online.

Money much better spent if you ask me. In closing, fuck computer gaming and the expensive horse it rode in on.

im always going to like consoles because you can get comfortable and play them. you dont have to sit right in front the screen. its also much easier to play games against/with friends. they're overall just much more convinient (and cheaper).

Great game but too bad Nintendo has let the N64 rot. Hardly any games made for it now. They seem to keep sucking people in to a new system and then abandon it.

Irish -

The one major problem with Consoles is the multiplayer aspect.

It' spretty difficult to have a massively multiplayer game with Consoles.

So far the most people I have been able to play online with a console is 4.

As opposed to computer games where you can easily have over a hundred people in one game.

Although I can't wait for the Online version of PS2 Madden.

And one other huge advantage that Computers have over consoles, keyboards are cheaper than controllers to replace.

I personally think computers are a better choice. For the money you would spend every 5 years or so getting the next new system that makes all the other ones look like shit, you can upgrade your computer and have it kick ass a few more months down the line. I think the problem most people run into with computers is they feel they have to supe it up with all the high end products, right out of the box. I'm more of a fan of building my comp up one piece at a time.

I've been burned with consoles before too. After owning Nintendo and Super Nintendo I thought N64 would be awesome. 5 years later I have a pretty elaborate looking paperweight with maybe one or two good games (Starfox, Smash Bros, Golden Eye, Ogre Battle, Shadowman.) and a huge amount of "It sounded like it would kick ass" games (Castlevania, Shadows of the Empire, The World is Not Enough)

Admittingly I don't own PS2 or X-box, but I had a roomate who brought PS2 to school last year and I wasn't too impressed for the money he payed. Madden kicked ass but it seemed like the only other good game that was out for it was Tekkan Tag. Though I still want to try GTA3 and MGS2.

The way I look at it is that I use the computer more for online games like starcraft, unreal tournament and return to castle wolfenstien.

However I do not think this debut should really start untill october when xbox and ps2 will be online. THen we can find out what is more superior.

But overall I prefer playing games on consoles because I like it on my tv and in my room with surround sound.

Actually the differences in systems are based on the users tastes. PC games are more for the I wanna sit here and think about it type crowd and consoles are more for the I just wanna kill something twitch gamer crowd. For me the PC can just do more game wise then any console ever made (just look at Operation Flashpoint to see what I mean)

KillerAtNight, do you know what speed the PS2 and X-box modems will be? If they have modems I don't think they match up to a nice cable modem.

There's always the mindless games for the computer too: Tomb Raider, the old school Duke Nuke'm games, Snoods. Though I do agree computer games seem to have a little bit more of problem solving behind them.

X-box is definately going to be broadband (people are already playing halo online on thier cable and DSL connections as well as standard dial up)

As for PS2 I'm not very sure when thats going to happen, Thier next big item seems to be the hard drive, which is going to be required for thier MMORPG Final Finatasy oh what is it, 11 now? Wait till they start pimping that to see what thier online solution is.

Also if you are serious about playing online, dsl > cable. Cable is shared with everyone on your block (and then some). Its sorta like plumbing if everyone is using the water at the same time when you go to use it there's less pressure you'll get your water but not at the pressure it could be. in terms of games this may lead to "Warping" "lag" or what ever your particular term for it. DSL is like a direct connection to the main pipe, plus it's only, on average, $10 more a month then cable for the same advertised speed, small price to pay to be an LPB god ;)

If Final Fantasy 11 is MMOR-whatever than it's definatly worth a look at. DSL runs on the proximity from the source, Cable runs on the number of units in the neighborhood. If you want to get past that though, you can go satelite but it's like $40 a month.

I'm lucky I live around a bunch of senior citizens who don't know how to use a calculator. If you go to DSLreports.com they can optimize your connection.

pmtrick, nullper is right but even if people in your naborhood have cable it still goes very fast. It does not seem as if ps2 will require broadban so I do not think that will battle the computers popularity with online games.

The problem with xbox is by september at the most there will probably be just 4 million xbox units sold and many people will be buying them just for solo player and multi with friends.

But if you do live in a area with lots of people who dl things or play games with cable then i guess dsl is the way you should go.

I know how cable modems work, I have one I'm very happy with. Except for Everquest it works great but that's more of an issue with my IRQs. Anyways I rented a house last year and we had Verizon DSL, it sucked ass. First it took 6 months for them to turn it on becuase they had to do work on the pole, then it hardly ever worked and when it did it was slow as shit. If you have to choose go Cable.

If anything the PS2 will probably be DSL if anything because they would have to strike a deal with the Cable companys to get a cable connection. I would think so anyways. Either that or satellite but it's expensive.

How is the X-box in comparison with PS2? I didn't hear any sales figures at all this year. I'm interested in seeing who sold what between the three of them (Gamecube as well)

This is true, but everyone connected would have to be doing some intense bandwidth hogging for you to notice any real distruption. DSL providers were trying to make this sound like a bad thing, because they provide a single connection for you. Unlike Cable, DSL is very much dependent on your location to your local phone company. The farther away you are, the slower your connection will be. Cable (as far as I know) is not location-dependent. I have Roadrunner, and with a few simple tweaks from DSLReports, I'm maxing out the 2000kpbs cap that RR gives me. Sure, I get lag on some servers, but it's not because of my connection, but usually an unstable server or some jackoff who's bringing a bad ping with him onto the server (like a 33.6 dial-up gamer). Also, if you don't know which is better, DSL or Cable, go to DSLReports and look at the reviews - they have it sorted by region, so you can see how well the companies are rated BY THE USERS in your are (i.e. Verizon might be highly rated in brooklyn, but not in Queens, etc.). I would highly reccomend Cable. You can practically install it yourself, and there's no software needed to install (assuming you already have an ethernet card - if not, they're $15, and you install it ike any other board on your PC, very easy). All you need to do is configure your browser to make use of the connection, tweak it up, and you're good to go.

From what I understand, the way you will have to connect (X-Box or PS2) will be to hook the console up to your connection and load a boot-disk of some kind, and thats it. It should do all the connecting for you, and I'm assuming it will connect to each of their respective online services for which you'll need to pay a monthly fee of some sort. Much like gaming through an online portal, except with a monthly fee (something like MSN'S Gaming Zone).

What I don't agree with is Sony appealing to the dial-up users of the world. I can understand from a business standpoint they'd make a hell of a lot more since broadband isn't really all over the place yet, but given the games and how graphic-intensive they are, I can't see how dial-up users are not going to encounter laggy games most of the time. At least with broadband only, you'd keep the high-pings out and the servers lag-free (unless they get maxed out by users if they're not moderated).

well instead of typing it all back up try this : Visit this Website you can skip by the stuff about the actual modem the pertinent bit are the network diagrams.

compared to dsl Visit this Website

These are both good reads. Heres a particularly interesting bit:

If you are one of the first users to connect to the Internet through a particular cable channel, then you may have nearly the entire bandwidth of the channel available for your use. As new users, especially heavy-access users, are connected to the channel, you will have to share that bandwidth, and may see your performance degrade as a result. It is possible that, in times of heavy usage with many connected users, performance will be far below the theoretical maximums. The good news is that this particular performance issue can be resolved by the cable company adding a new channel, and splitting the base of users.

What this means is that in normal usage, browsing downloading or what have you things would have to get really bad before it would be a drastically noticebale performance hit thanks to redunacy and error checks that are part of the Internet Protocol (IP) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) (the two almost universal "languages" used by computers to do browsing and downloading/uploading repectively). Games however need to be more picky in order to keep things seeming normal for the player. The networking code in most games doesn't allow for the normal error checking that normally occurs on the internet. What this means is that you the client need to have a clear and virtually constant pathway between you and the server, if you don't you'll experience things like lag or warping.

ok now that the basics are out of the way lets look at that statement from the article above in terms of games. A heavy user is anyone who's downloading tons of stuff , MP3's, porn, the library of congress, even us game players. So if even just a few other clients are doing some heavy usage type stuff this can affect you by lengthening the amount of time it takes for information to make a round trip from your comp to the server and back (this info is usually available in most games as ping) or can cause packets of info to be dropped (which cause that warping stuff or, if it's really bad, the phone jack icon to appear on the screen when every thing freezes)

now it true you can have problems on any sort of connection, DSL included, how ever the farther down the line from you on the internet the problems occur the better, with cable most of the problems start at the top of the line. Add to this that in almost every market, the cable internet providers have oversold thier bandwidth and you'll see why hardcore gamers avoid the stuff (or bitch and moan loudly if its the only broadband service available in thier area)

DSL well the big problem with that is getting it but once you do you fall instantly and madly in love with it.

Mind you this is all coming from an uber hardcore gamer geek. So I gotta be honest and say for normal every day use cable is fine.

I looked up the site but I have to study it a bit more. I'm just telling you from my own experiences, bottom line if you go with a reputable company with good customer service, your experience will be much better. I've already told you about my horror story with Verizon DSL. Cablevision's Cable modem so far has been nothing but spectacular. I play Everquest on it with little problems dealing with my connection and RTCW with no problems.

Here's something that I hate dealing with that never comes up with video games SPAM!!! I think I get more spam than regular email. Anyone know how to stop it?

Yep - make another email address. Use this address when you're buying stuff online, or signing up for shit (like newsletters, etc.) Only give out your main email address to friends and family. Also if your'e an AOL user, avoid the chat rooms with the name you don't want to get SPAM with, because there are usually people trolling those rooms and taking everyones name down to go on a mass email list.
