I bought an Olympus D-510 last week. (2.1 megapixels, 8 meg smartmedia plus a free 64 meg smartmedia card) and I love it, but I'm having an issue regarding print clarity.

I took a few pics that look great on my monitor - but when I print them out, I see they're not as crisp as I would like them to be. I have an HP 1115 Photosmart printer, and when I print other pics (like off the net) they look sweet. I'm taking the pics with a default resolution of 1600 x 1200, and printing them at the same resolution.

I know 8 x 10 prints might still be a little fuzzy (though I heard 2.1 was plenty for great 8 x 10 prints) but I've also printed smaller sizes, and it's the same deal. Am I doing something wrong? I'm also using HP Photopaper, so it's not the print media. I think I'm missing something in the actual cam setup, but the book isn't very helpful - so I thought I'd throw it out here and see what I got.

go to start, settings, and click on printers.

Select your printer by left clicking once and then right click and go to properties. Once there you should see (in Winxp... not sure for other op systems) a button labeled "printing preferences". Click it. Another screen should come up and you want to go to the second tab reading "Paper/Quality". Then make sure that under "Quality settings" you have "Best" selected. This should right your problem. IF it does not, try aligning the print cartridges. You can do that by opening the lid, removing the cartridges, close the lid, turn it off, wait a few seconds, turn it back on, open lid, reinsert cartridges, and it will print off an alignment page.

Also you may want to try to use photo paper rather than plain paper if you are doing so.

I've already looked into that - was the first thing I troubleshot. With my printer, the print settings are base don the media you tell it you are printing on (though you can still cahnge it after if you like). Since I've only been using photo-paper, it always sets the priter settings at "best". I'll make double sure tonight when I get home, but I'm almost positive the settings are "best" by default.

As for cartridge alignemtn, the printer is a week old, and the cartridges are just as old - and I aligned them before I did anything with the printer.

I'm thinking it has something to do with the way I'm saving the pictures. The cam saves them as a default of .JPG, but .TIFF is another option - should I use that instead? I think it causes the file sizes to be much larger, but wouldn't that generate a more clearer print? (more data in the file = more gooder picture, analogous to a WAV file sounding better than an MP3 file because it has more music data in it?).

You might want to invest in a special photo cartridge for your printer. They are costly, but worth it.

That is correct in a sense. .tiff and .bmp are file extensions for photos/images that are in their raw format and that is why they are larger. This does give you a better picture.

A jpeg is a compressed image designed to take up less space and the way that it does it is by reducing the amount of hues/shades and colors. This gives you a more granular and pixelated picture.

So using a tiff format may give you a better picture and is definately worth a shot.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 775 and had a similar problem the pics on the monitor were fine but once I printed them they were fuzzy. When you import them save them as a bmp then use a program called clearskin its at Visit this Website This should take care of the fuzziness. Worked for me

Horny, What type of paper are you printing on? I have a really shitty printer and when I got better photo paper it made the pictures 100 times better.

But, depending on what type of paper...is it glossy photo paper or is it high resolution paper? There are two sides to high resolution paper.

Also...photo ink cartridges for your specific printer are really important. Like Lent said, they are expensive but very worth it when it comes to printing up photos.

I really don't think (in my experience anyway) that it is the file you save the pic in, when it comes to printing. I could be wrong, tho.

Also...Tubesteak, how do you like your Nikon? I just got the Nikon Coolpix 5000 and have yet to get it out of the box and play with it. I am actually thinking it may be a little too much for what I generally use a camera for and wonder if I should have gotten something a little simpler. I have been using my Sony Cybershot (which I love), but there are some drawbacks to using it.

Excellent link! It worked very well! It's a little sharp on the pink/red, but I can work with that. That's one hell of a plug-in/add-on!

I'm mainly using HP Plus photo paper, Matte finish. I tried the glossy for one pic and it came out well, but it wasn't a pic that I took with the my camera.

I have to disagree with you Luna - I went to a .TIFF File and the pics are fairly nicer (sharper). Of course, it's a much larger file-size, but that's what CDR's are for :)

I also think a big factor is the lighting conditions here in my apartment. I haven't taken outdoor pics yet (too fuckin' cold), but I think the natural daylight will produce much nicer shots. The cam has a flash, but even on my regular camera an indoor flash can only do so much for good pics.

And I have to concur with Jack (HAHA, he beat ya to it Barch LOLOL) - a WOW pic from Luna using either of her cameras would be a most welcome sight to behold :)
