Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Ok, I love FPS games and now with my new computer I can actually play the newer ones(Athlon XP 1700+, 256DDR, GF3Ti200, 40gig7200, pretty sweet). I'm sure I'm not the only person who has this problem but I just can never play a game well on a keyboard. It's just a matter that I really can't remember what key does what which kills my reaction time(which of course is crucial in these games) as well as being able to get to the key quickly--if it's say on the complete opposite side of the board. I try, if possible, to use a gamepad in conjunction with the keyboard but thats not always an option. Does anyone have any succesful strategies they use to use a keyboard effectively? Or is there anyway to program a game, even if its not an in game option, to use a gamepad and use it effectively without losing too many options? Any advice would be appreciated.
CarsonOGin Froy seems ok, Faceman is fair. But Slash is a cunt, FTL is a total soccer mom, JoeyBigArms thinks he's a fucking message board god. | posted on 03-25-2002 @ 3:39 PM
Psychopath Registered: Dec. 01 | Well I try to keep it as simple as possible. I use the arrow keys with my left hand and map the extra buttons to the Insert/Delete/home/end group. R-Ctrl shift and enter also work quite well. Use left click for shoot, right click for jump, and the middle button for secondary weapons, and I hope you have a scrolling mouse so you can switch weapons on the fly. so I basically just make every FPS game I play just like I used to play Quake. Since all FPS's are basically Quake with better textures, and new maps. Hope that helps... This message was edited by CarsonOGin on 3-25-02 @ 3:43 PM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I might regret saying this, but I agree with Carson on this one. Simple is the name of the game. I have used Carson's technique a few times, but I usually play the WASD config for movement, and leaving most of the extra functions mapped as is (i.e. use/open button is usually ENTER, crouch is usually C, etc.). In a game where you don't have many options the Insert-Home-Delete group would work nicely, but some games there are more than 6 functions, and you end up going back to the main keys anyway. Also if you're using a standard KB (rectanular), you might want to consider trying something like an MS Natural board. Since it's curved the keys (depending on how you sit) are often a little easier to play on. There are not kb/joystick hybrids coming out that basically merge the mouse and 8 to 10 keyboard commands all on one controller - I think PC Gamer had a review of one last month or the month before. I haven't tried one out, but they gave it a pretty favorable review. You can reach me through AIM or email. Feel free to contact me if you have any board questions, techie (PC) questions, or even if you just wanna chat.

Psychopath Registered: Jul. 01 | Its a learning experience. Back in the good ol' days of DOS, that's all I used. Descent was one that really had me master the keyboard. www.centralwow.com - AIM: wow mace or click on my sig for fun

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 02 | I wholeheartedly agree with M-ACE. Play Descent for a couple of months, then the Quake-type games will feel simple in comparison. And throw away that mouse, it just gets in the way on these games... .. It wasn't lies, it was just...bullshit.
