Hanger-On Registered: May. 02 | sawp, im runnin an athlon xp 1800+ and my cpu temp runs between 55-60, and the case 45-50. Isnt that a bit hot? 60 is the over setting. My comp shuts down randomly sometimes (probably cause its overheating). Im using onboard nic, but disabled sound, only card i have in are a Radeon 8500 and a Monster MX400, runnin 512 OEM ddr mem. Also i can only set agp to 1x, 2x or 4x give me lockups a few minutes after bootup. 8500 is one of the most recent cards and i know it supports 4x... Im using a Volcano 7 heatsink, biggest i could find, whats wrong? This message was edited by evidence on 5-23-02 @ 3:51 PM

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I'm guessing the temps you supplied were in celsius and I can't recall how to convert into farenheit so...My Athlon XP1700+ CPU runs at about 100-105 farenheit and the case at about 80-90s, and thats with 2 case fans and a pretty powerful heatsink. Hanger-On Registered: May. 02 | most people run in the 100-120 range if im not mistaken. A case fan or 2 can cool the cpu off 20F? I didnt know the air in the case affected it that much.

Psychopath Registered: May. 02 | i have an Antec SOHO case, the same towers Alienware uses, i have 5 fans 3 blowing air in, 2 front one on the side, and 2 blowing the air out. my temp is usually 110-115f also depends on the humidity of my room, im in an attic so it gets pretty fucking hot and my mobo alarm starts beeping like crazy, thats why my tower is next to my A/C unit:) to bring your temp down use artic silver thermal compound, suppose to bring the temp down 10 degrees. i have a the thermal pad that came with the heatsink/amd xp 1900 chipset.

Hanger-On Registered: May. 02 | Thx for the help... yeah i used the thermal compound, but when i took the heatsink off to look it was all pushed around the chip on the center of the cpu, is it possible for a heatsink to have too much pressure, leaving no room for the compound to stay under it? Also would the 140 temp affect everything? IE when im installing games from CDRom i get random corrupted file and I/O errors, and also i can only run agp 1x

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote:You have 2 vid cars? I haven't seen that since the days of Voodoo2 boards. That might be the cause of your AGP issues (I am assuming one of th ecards is a PCI board - the MX400?) As for the heat, definitely add another fan - even a PCI slot fan would help (note - the fan just takes up a spot in the slot, but you don't actually connect it to the Motherboard, you just screw it to the case and connect it to a power plug). Have you tried running the computer with the case totally off? If not, try it, because you can't get much better cooling than that. If you still have troubles, it might be something other than heat giving you grief. EDIT : My bad, I was thinking the MX board was a vid card - but it's a sound card, isn't it? Either way, definitely try running it with the case off, maybe with a regular fan cooling it off. You can always hook up a portable A/C to the rig :) You can reach me through AIM or email. I really don't give a fuck as to which one you use.
