Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | http://www.gamespot.co.uk/stories/reviews/0,2160,2089752,00.html Prepare to encounter total war. Page 1 of 2 next page» Codemasters' Operation Flashpoint has been looming over first-person and military shooter fans' horizons for quite some time now and so it was with no small relief that we finally got our grubby paws on finished review code for Bohemia Interactive's military sim-cum-shooter just a couple of short weeks ago. If there's anyone out there who's missed our previous dispatches from the frontline, Operation Flashpoint is set during the height of the cold war in 1985 and revolves around a fictional conflict between NATO and rebel Warsaw pact forces on three isolated islands away from the main European fire zone. However, what has really sparked gamers' imaginations has been Flashpoint's vast scope and potential for free-form gameplay, with developer Bohemia aiming to deliver a realistic total war experience played from a first-person perspective that allows you to go anywhere and do virtually anything. Some interesting one-off single missions or the full-on campaign game are probably the first aspects of Flashpoint you'll want to explore. Beginning as Private David Armstrong, a lowly grunt on garrison duty, at first you're simply "obeying orders" as you work through training and some initial skirmishes with the Soviet forces. Eventually you can work your way up through the ranks, driving or flying everything from jeeps and tanks to attack helicopters and eventually commanding entire platoons of troops and vehicles in huge battles across a vast and accurately modelled war zone. It's a hugely ambitious aim and is the first serious attempt to bring a convincing virtual battlefield onto your home desktop. Playing Flashpoint is certainly unlike most things you'll have seen on a PC before. Perhaps the best way to illustrate how it works is to describe a sample mission. Out on a reconnaissance patrol, my squad's involved in a fierce firefight and after getting hit, I black out and wake up at dawn in the middle of the woods surrounded by the dead bodies of my comrades. Cut off behind enemy lines, it would be easy to panic but the radio suddenly chatters into life giving me an evacuation point about 15km to the south with a fairly short time limit to get there before US forces pull out... and that's it, I've got an M-16, a few spare magazines and a map and a compass, but how I get there is entirely up to me. After several failed yomps across country which result in premature demise, I manage to creep into a nearby village and steal a Russian jeep, piling it down the highway past some bemused lines of Soviet troops. However, just as I'm about to reach safety, the evac zone comes under heavy attack from the south east, I can't break through the enemy lines encircling the village and the US choppers pull out, forcing me to abandon the jeep and sneak my way through Soviet-infested woods to the north towards an alternative pick up point. After dealing with a lone sniper I finally arriving at the new rendezvous and step into the clearing, only to be briefly captured by the Russians, before being dramatically freed again by a local resistance group - with all this events happening in the course of a single mission. It's tense, brutal and extremely atmospheric and really brings a sense of the often random, bewildering way that individual soldiers experience war. This real-world approach to combat is reinforced by a combat model which is a lot closer to the Counter-Strike experience than any gung-ho, Rambo-style "one GI takes on the entire Soviet bloc and wins" encounter. Just one or two shots are enough to kill you (and prompt some very nice battlefield quotations) and attacking from cover, preparing ambushes, setting up firing zones and just knowing when to keep your head down are all important aspects if you want to survive. You'll spend as much time crawling through bushes, ducking into cover and poking a tentative gun barrel around deserted street corners as you do charging gloriously into battle. That said, there are some marvelous set pieces when the firefights really do get going, with whole squads of US troops assaulting enemy held villages, brief bloody engagements breaking out in the woods and tactical (and occasional fatigues-staining) withdrawals as Soviet tanks come rumbling into view. The weaponry and vehicles are all suitably real and combined with some highly impressive AI means both sides really do seem to respond well tactically to the ebb and flow of the conflict. This sense of immersion runs throughout Flashpoint and is perhaps its most impressive feature, with even little details like the pounding of your pulse as you run towards an enemy held village reinforcing the sense of danger. So, a vast game world, atmospheric missions which have been shaped by the development team's time in the Czech army, authentic real-world combat and a chance to command your own army - everything would appear to be rosy in the Flashpoint garden, but sadly it just ain't so. While all these features are extremely impressive, simultaneously Flashpoint seems to suffer from so many rough edges that you can almost cut your finger on them. The game engine, while perfectly adequate, is not exactly cutting edge and although it's able to render the countryside woods and towns effectively, soldiers do tend to look jagged, angular and slightly unconvincing at close quarters. Some of the cut-scenes that explain each mission have strangely variable sound and occasionally you travel to your next rendezvous only to find that you can't trigger the event that was supposed to happen there and you have to go back and start again. It is a touch disappointing and perhaps some more time spent in QA would have ironed out all these little bugs and glitches. However, while they do detract a little from the game, they didn't for one moment stop me going back to it as often as I could to take part in the next mission or explore a new piece of equipment, weapon or a totally different scenario. Given Flashpoint's ambitious aims and its many pluses I think we can afford to be more than a little indulgent about these deficiencies and that's without even exploring the potential for multiplayer and the integral mission editor, which we'll cover in a further review once internet servers are up and running (which shouldn't be too long given the huge amount of interest Flashpoint has already generated on the net). Operation Flashpoint is conflict as you've never experienced it before and I think fans of military shooters are going to absolutely love being immersed in this new total war experience. The virtual battlefield has just come a whole lot closer - just keep an eye out for those reds under the bed! CART Taco Bell Ice Hockey MetallicA | ||||
