Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/previews/0,10869,2578144,00.html One of the most surprising games on the show floor was Activision's Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The game has apparently been in development for nearly a year by Gray Matter, the group of ex-Xatrix designers. The game is powered by id Software's Quake III engine, and to date, is the best adaptation of the technology we've seen. Just like the original Wolfenstein, the game is set in Germany during World War II, and B.J. (your main character) finds himself in a jail cell yet again. Even though Activision claims that Return will have a humorous element into it, from what we saw, the game is as serious a game as any other first-person shooter. Nazi soldiers have hit-specific reactions and damage, and will recoil backwards if shot in the shoulder, while they'll double over if hit in the stomach. Apparently, the game has a very Indiana Jones-esque feel to it, because, just like the movies, the Nazis have been fiddling around with the occult in hopes of finding a secret weapon with which to win the war. The game opens up with a Nazi experiment gone wrong, and undead soldiers start attacking their Nazi creators and causing general havoc throughout the Wolfenstein castle. Return to Castle Wolfenstein features a lot of the same weapons found in Wolfenstein and Spear of Destiny. Activision was showing off the M40 machine gun, the potato masher grenade, a German World War II pistol, and a flamethrower. Of course, BJ now can use his trusty boot as a melee weapon. In fact, in Return, players can kick and use a weapon at once. All said, the game had three somewhat complete levels, all of which looked very impressive. Throughout the three levels, players make their way from the cell to the castle's gondola controls while fighting the Germans and avoiding the undead creatures. The game is still quite a way from completion, and in typical id Software fashion, the company isn't stating a release date for the game. CART Taco Bell Ice Hockey MetallicA

Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/previews/0,10869,2761888,00.html One of many games being shown at Activision's booth this year is the first-person shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The first level in the E3 demonstration takes place at a Nazi air base with a primary objective of destroying as much as you possibly can. The mission starts out in a small hill area surrounding the main runway with a few towers lining the sides. From your position on the hill, you can use a number of different methods to scout out the area since you have access to so many different types of long-range scouting equipment. You can either use regular binoculars, the scope on your sniper rifle, or a night-vision scope that gives you a clearer look into the darker areas of the air base. In addition to rifles, there are a few other classes of weapons, including pistols, machine-gun pistols, and special weapons such as the flamethrower and the tesla coil. After getting an idea of where the enemy soldiers are, you can proceed using a stealth approach to avoid the risk of drawing a huge group of enemy soldiers, or you can go into the base with a slightly more active strategy. Unfortunately, the level on display isn't quite as accommodating as later levels for stealth, so it's unlikely that you can avoid conflict for more than a few minutes. When the first enemy soldier detects you, others come to your area to give them backup. In fact, instead of using a simple respawning technique, a group of enemy soldiers come in on trucks and other vehicles. Also, depending on the strategy you want to use, you can open doors the old-fashioned way by gently pushing them, or you can get the jump on enemy soldiers by kicking the door in and immediately shooting. The artificial intelligence used for the enemy soldiers in general is really impressive. In one room on the base, one of the Nazi soldiers flips a table over and then takes cover behind it, occasionally jumping up from behind the table to fire a few rounds at you. When you confront enemy soldiers in an open area, they scramble around looking for cover, whether it's behind a small wall or a group of crates. Likewise, if you run for cover, enemy soldiers pursue you. Visually, Return to Castle Wolfenstein looks impressive. The Quake III: Team Arena engine has been used to its limit--the outside areas are absolutely enormous, and the character models are quite detailed. There are also plenty of objects that you can destroy, ranging from small bulletin boards to planes that haven't taken off from the hangar--though you have to use dynamite to destroy the larger objects. As an indication of Gray Matter's dedication to making the best levels possible, it's even put guardrails around the tops of ladders to prevent unnecessary deaths caused by falling from ladders. But perhaps Wolfenstein's most impressive feature is its special effects, like the flame effect on the flamethrower, which produces an incredibly realistic plume of flame. Even when you're not actually firing it, the flamethrower emits a smaller blue flame that bathes the surrounding areas in a subtle blue light. Unfortunately, the developers are still choosing not to reveal anything about Wolfenstein's multiplayer modes other than that the multiplayer features will be Wolfenstein-specific. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is currently scheduled for a late 2001 release. CART Taco Bell Ice Hockey MetallicA

Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | http://www.gamespot.co.uk/stories/previews/0,2160,2091282,00.html A legion of spectacular new shots from Gray Matter's finest When the original Wolfenstein appeared, way back in 1992, few players realised they were witnessing the birth of what has now become the PC's premier gaming genre. From the humble beginnings of full colour VGA (gosh!) graphics and a hefty 320x200 resolution, Wolfenstein's heritage runs through Id's own epic Doom and Quake series, and has influenced every cutting edge first-person shooter since its inception. If you consider yourself any sort of FPS fan, then you'll know that this year, almost a full decade after its original debut, Id's classic is set to make another splash in the thoroughly modern form of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, a Quake III powered, World War 2 epic which is being developed by Gray Matter Interactive. Although publishers Activision have drawn a veil of security over the project, which remains as watertight as a deep sea diver's trousers, we've been mounting our own undercover intelligence operation to bring you the latest plot and storyline details on the game. What's certain is that once again you're going to be cast in the role of BJ Blaskowitz, the rock-hard US ranger from the original game. However, this time you've been recruited by the Office of Secret Actions (OSA), a covert US military intelligence agency charged with foiling Heinrich Himmler's plans to win the war through a series of occult genetic experiments. But the OSA certainly haven't picked you at random, because you're the only person with direct knowledge and experience of Himmler's nefarious doings. The opening sequence of Wolfenstein is currently scheduled to begin with you in the position of prisoner waking in a cell in the notorious castle itself. Armed with only a knife, your first priority is to escape. And after overpowering a guard in your cell, you'll get your first real weapon, a standard issue Luger handgun. However, by raiding store rooms and looting the bodies of guards, you'll soon be able to acquire a small arsenal of weapons, like the MP40, a Mauser Rifle, and even a flame thrower. You'll certainly need them, because during your flight, you stumble across some of the bizarre occult creatures and experiments contained in the castle. Armed with this dangerous but vital knowledge, your first priority is to return to the allies and warn them about Himmler's deadly plans. Recently, further details have emerged on Wolfenstein's back story, which shed even more light on the occult theme that runs through the game. In Wolfenstein's version of events, the WW2 Himmler discovers the legend of Prince Heinrich (also coincidentally his namesake) a ninth century Saxon nobleman who discovers some ancient texts from the East. Tapping into the power of Thule, a race of ancient non-corporeal beings, Prince Heinrich raised a vast undead army of dark knights to help forge his dream of an independent Saxon state. However, in 943AD, a mysterious Christian monk stood alone against Heinrich's army of dark knights, and defeated them, imprisoning the Prince in a living tomb on a remote mountain peak. Cut to 1943. As the war begins to go badly for the Nazis, Himmler grows ever more obsessed with the legend, devoting huge amounts of time and resources to the search for the lost tomb, which he believes could turn the tide of the war. As Blaskowitz makes his escape from the castle to warn the allies, Himmler has already located the lost Prince's tomb, and is slowly and methodically honing the genetic experiments and dark rituals which could create a new army of super-soldiers for the Nazis. All Himmler lacks is a vital serum from a hidden grave, which is the key to resurrecting the modern day dark knights. Cast as Blaskowitz, you're the only man alive who can stop him. Like so much else about Wolfenstein, there's a great deal to admire in the way Gray Matter have woven in the Nazi's real-life obsession with Astrology, the occult, and genetic experimentation, to create a compelling setting and plot line for the game. Such an intriguing premise should certainly provide plenty of atmospheric locations to explore. There are underground crypts, secret weapons facilities, genetic labs, and, of course, the sinister castle itself, already slated for inclusion. Such a strong occult background story line has also given Gray Matter a chance to let their imaginations truly run wild, and develop some really bizarre and innovative enemy creatures, which you'll see detailed in our impressive new gallery. While our undercover spies haven't been able to uncover any clues, as yet, to Wolfenstein's ultimate finale, it would come as a great surprise if Gray Matter didn't have some truly spectacular conclusion planned. Return to Castle Wolfenstein? We can hardly wait. CART Taco Bell Ice Hockey MetallicA
