One of the most popular PC games at this year's E3 was undoubtedly Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Currently in development at the Oklahoma-based 2015, this first-person shooter will mark the first time that the respected Medal of Honor series ventures away from the PlayStation and onto the PC. Since it was first announced earlier this year, the game has come a long way in its promise to deliver the realism of World War II while still conforming to standards of action-packed first-person shooters.

The game will use an enhanced version of the impressive Quake III graphics engine to render its realistic World War II-themed environments--including the extremely convincing D-Day drop sequence that was demonstrated at E3. This scene was modeled after the unforgettable opening battle of Saving Private Ryan, and while it lacked the graphic violence of the film, the fully playable sequence from Medal of Honor was just as immersive and similarly intense.

The other sequence shown was in a hazy, war-torn level tentatively called "Snipertown," in which the main character traversed a ruined Eastern European city filled with enemy gunmen hiding in the wreckage. You'll get to use your own sniper rifle to take care of these gunmen, and each shot will be marked by a reverberating boom. Later, the level is bombarded by aircraft, which send huge chunks of rubble in every direction. It all made for a suitable encore to the D-Day level.

The game promises to have a lot of detail and a lot of different types of scenarios. As a high-ranking military operative, you'll get to brandish a number of different historical firearms as you help determine the Allies' victory in a number of locations behind enemy lines. You won't be operating alone in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and your teammates will often depend on you for cover fire as they go about their objectives. Missions will be scripted and story-driven but will also give you a lot of room for variety. The computer promises to make for a challenging opponent, as enemy troops will lie in ambush and rush out to attack when they hear you reloading your weapons.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault will also feature a multiplayer mode, which has a lot of potential due to the game's World War II theme. While details about the multiplayer mode haven't yet been revealed, what's already been shown of the game's single-player levels is extremely promising, especially considering how successful the Medal of Honor series has been on the PlayStation.

AUTHENTIC WWII GAMEPLAY - AUTHENTIC PRODUCER Q&A
By Tony Lynch

Imagine landing on Omaha Beach, fighting the Axis' forces on the cliffs of Northern Africa, or even engaging in battle behind enemy lines in Nazi Germany. Soon you'll be able to experience these historical events in Medal of Honor Allied Assault. With the most advanced technology of the PC platform and countless hours of WWII research to assure authenticity, Allied Assault provides the definitive World War II experience.

We found out more classified information about this highly anticipated title from Allied Assault's Associate Producer, Stephen Townsend.

Q: Where is Medal of Honor Allied Assault being developed? Is the production something new for the Medal of Honor (MOH) series?
Stephen Townsend: 2015 Inc., based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is designing and developing the game for the EALA studio (formally DreamWorks Interactive). The PlayStation and PlayStation®2 games in the Medal of Honor series have been and continue to be created internally, but after we decided to take the franchise to the PC platform and create a brand-new game, we went looking for a team that could do the MOH series proud. The 2015 team has some of the best programmers, designers, artists, and animators that we've ever had the pleasure of working with and their efforts over the past twelve months have been nothing short of stunning.

Q: What kind of research is required for developing a game set during World War II?
ST: A lot -- but fortunately there is a wealth of information out there regarding WWII, not surprising since it directly involved three quarters of the world's population. One of the most important elements for creating any Medal of Honor title is maintaining as much authenticity as possible while still making a fun game. We explore just about every research avenue available to us, from viewing countless hours of WWII archival footage to visiting the actual beaches at Normandy where the D-Day landings occurred. The involvement of our military advisor, Captain Dale Dye, USMC (ret.), has been invaluable to the entire Medal of Honor series.

Q: Can you talk about Captain Dale Dye's role and the input he has had in the game's development?
ST: Captain Dye has been with us since the beginning. When our Supreme Allied Commander Steven Spielberg created the Medal of Honor series back in 1997, one of the most important things he did for us was ask the Captain to come on board as our military advisor, the same role he had performed for Steven on Saving Private Ryan. For us, it has turned out to be an incredibly fruitful partnership. Over the past few years -- in addition to all the classroom instruction and design sessions -- the team has been able to participate in the same style of "boot camp" training that Captain Dye puts actors through before a movie, ranging from live-fire exercises with vintage WWII weapons to slogging through the mud for squad tactics field training. As a combat veteran and World War II historian in his own right, the Skipper brings a perspective that you can't get from just books or movies. Our motivation to honor the memories of those who served has been forged by his involvement.

Q: Medal of Honor Allied Assault uses the powerful Quake III graphics engine. What challenges or opportunities has this provided to the development team for the first Medal of Honor adventure on the PC?
ST: The Quake III engine is extremely versatile and allows the development team to create vast levels that are exponentially larger than anything we've been able to do before -- both inside and out. The biggest thing, from a technology standpoint, is that it finally lets us realize the dream of building an Omaha Beach level that lives up to expectations that people have coming from a game in the Medal of Honor series. It was impossible to pull off before, but combine the talented team at 2015 with the Quake III technology and D-Day suddenly becomes a reality.

In addition to the Invasion levels, the environments vary from the baked desert of North Africa to the frozen tundra of Norway, to the bombed-out villages of France, where whole sides of buildings have been blown apart by artillery -- you can see individual rooms, complete with their own wallpaper, furniture, and personal effects. It's really a wonderful amount of detail. Adding to that you have trees and bushes that sway gently in the breeze, and real-life weather like rain, thunder, and lighting, and even snow flurries that make you feel like in you're fighting it out in the real world.

Q: What is the setting for this installment? Will Allied Assault's storyline involve Jimmy Patterson or Manon, the heroes of the original two Medal of Honor adventures?
ST: It's important that each game in the Medal of Honor series tells a good story. For Allied Assault, we're introducing a new character, Lt. Mike Powell, who is a professional soldier and already involved with fighting the ground war when the game starts. He's a member of the elite U.S. Army Rangers, who were often at the frontlines of each of the major battles in the European Theater of Operations -- including D-Day. Fans of the previous games know the Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the CIA) has always played an important part in the series. MOHAA is no different, but we're adding a few new twists this time.

Ever since the first game, the continuity of the MOH universe has been a priority for us, and all the missions in Allied Assault are intertwined with the established timeline. The design team at 2015 has done a lot of fun things that tie the game in with the rest of the series (including the other MOH games in production that will come out after MOHAA).

There are a lot of little elements -- if you remember back to the first game there was a plane shot down behind enemy lines carrying a G3 operations officer that Jimmy had to rescue. The player's briefing comes via some intelligence gathered by the plane's pilot, who was rescued the night before in a daring search and rescue mission. Who rescued the pilot? Well, Lt. Mike Powell did, of course!

We want to keep most of the other crossovers a secret, but it's safe to say that Manon will make an appearance, and Jimmy himself will help Lt. Powell with some enemy intelligence regarding a certain, and rather infamous, location in the MOH universe. Allied Assault not only expands on some of the history of the MOH universe, but it also takes the series in new and exciting directions that will have repercussions on all the games that follow.

Q: What types of missions will you undertake in Allied Assault? Are any based on historical events?
ST: History is always better than anything you can make up, and we often use real events as a launching point for a mission. There are some very key moments of the European Campaign the game touches on -- like Operation Torch in North Africa and the Normandy Invasion in France --but what can be even more fun are the missions that focus on real events or circumstances that were crucial in the progress of the war but perhaps not as well known to the public at large. For example, the second mission of the game puts you on the trail of new Nazi technology that will upset the balance of power between Allied shipping in the North Atlantic and the German U-boat fleet -- something that could (pardon the pun) turn the tide of war in the German's favor if you don't put a stop to it. It's all real stuff, which makes it all the more exciting.

Q: Do the missions involve stealth tactics, all-out assaults, or a combination of both?
ST: Medal of Honor Allied Assault runs the gamut of disguise levels that involve stealth, missions where the player needs to cooperate with a squad to achieve its goals, sniper duels in an occupied French town, and all-out combat on a grand scale between the Allies and the Germans. It's everything in the previous games and a lot, lot more.

Q: What types of new features does Allied Assault introduce to the franchise? What is your favorite feature?
ST: Allied Assault builds on the gameplay established in previous games of fun missions filled with incredibly intelligent enemies. The biggest addition is the "Allied" in Allied Assault -- you now have AI troops fighting with you, not just against you. One of our favorite missions at the Studio is a level called "Sniper Town" where the player hooks up with a demoralized and frightened squad of American soldiers that have been separated from their unit. The player can simply choose to ignore them and go about fulfilling their original orders, or they can join up with the guys and shepherd them through this incredibly dangerous environment filled with German troops and armor -- and a few elite Nazi marksmen hidden in some very choice spots. If you choose to help the squad, the results (from a gameplay perspective) are quite amazing. With Allied Assault, the game world feels much more alive than it ever has before.

Q: Does Allied Assault contain a multiplayer mode?
ST: Yes. There will be various head-to-head and team play modes.

Q: How far along is Allied Assault's development? And when can we expect to play it?
ST: The game is on track to ship in the Fall of 2001. Players can expect a demo shortly before the game hits store shelves!
