Visit this Website for all your info on Olympus. They don't have the price but the $400 ones should be in 1-1.5 MP range.

bartman, since AM is recommending Olympus, I got this info in my email today, and for 2.1 MP, it falls right under the $400 you're looking to spend. I can't recommend any other camera, as I don't really know much about them, but its my next "toy" to consider looking into.

I didn't really look over the cam in that link, mainly because a cam isn't "in the budget" for me (gettin' hitched in 3 weeks - got a new TV, but thats all I'm gettin' for a while LOL), but I do know the higher the MP, the better the quality of picture. I think you also have to consider memory - high quality pics need a lot of memory to be stored in. A friend of mine showed me a Sony Mavica (an older one that used floppy disks as film) and the picture looked very nice - that was about a year ago. So I would assume the technology has advanced in the past year so that for a fairly decent price, you can get a cam that takes awesome pics. I love the idea of not having to develop film too.

I hope this reaches you before you make a purchase. DO NOT buy ANYTHING under 2 megapixels. It looks like shit when you print it out. You should be able to buy a really nice 2.0+ megapixel Kodak for under $400. PC Magazine has always recommended Kodak over just about anything else in the same price range. Pass on the Sony, because like the BetaMax, nothing else uses their "Memory Stick" technology except Sony stuff. Go with a camera that uses Compact Flash or Smart Media memory. It's cheaper, because there are a lot of generic companies that make it, compared to Sony's monopoly on memory stick. I have a Kodak DC280 (which is an older 2.0 MP camera, and it takes awesome photos. Check out the Kodak DC4800. It has a $100 rebate on it, and comes out to about $400 after the rebate. It's a 3.1 megapixel camera too. Go to www.pricewatch.com and do a search for "DC4800" to find it. Rebate expires 7/14/01.

OK...I'm not sure about this, but I guess it might be something to look for.

My brother picked up a top-shelf fuji digital camera a little while back. He spent a fortune and the camera is awesome...BUT it uses these weird batteries that you can only buy from Fuji. They cost like 50 bucks and don't last long at all. I don't know about other companies, but I guess you might want to consider this when deciding.

Good luck

Oh avoid "refurbished" cameras. Let me say I ended up paying more to fix the camera then going out and buying a brand new one.

Oh never drop it!!!!!!!!
You'll thank me later.

If you live on LI you can bring your camera directly to Olympus in Woodbury.

I have a Canon Powershot S100 and I think it's awesome. Dunno megapixels for it off the top of my head.
