Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Well, I went to the show on Wednesday, but was too damn lazy then to post this, but now I'm ready. Tucked away in the front left corner of the main floor of the Javitz Center here in NYC was a little section (about 25' x 30-40') of rows upon rows of brand-spankin'-new PowerMac G4s, all connected by Gigabit (1000Mbps) ethernet. What were they doing? Running some of the newest games to hit the streets, and in some cases, games not even on shelves. First, they had a giant screen showing previews of upcoming games, such as (what I'm waiting for) Max Payne. Damn, this game looks H-O-T. Flying casings, Bullet-Time (™ ® ©) sequences, and a whole lotta blood. Cool. I'm not sure if the PC version is out yet, but a bunch of the networked G4s were running Red Faction (the version they were running was a pre-release about-80% complete copy). "Slick" is about all I can say. Nice effects and smooth textures, but a little jerky. The rest of the G4s were running either Tropico, Quake III Team Arena, or Alice. Alice is also one swank package. Some of the lighting effects really reminded me of Oni (another quality game). This year was also nVidia's first year at a MacWorld Expo, and they had quite a presence. They had a bunch of PowerMac G4s running at 867Mhz all with GeForce3 cards, and everything they put on their screens ran as smooth as silk. Finally the Mac community has a respectable graphics card company supplying us few Mac gamers with respectable preformance. Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | Steve Jobs brought Mac into the limelight and then was its undoing by sticking with the 'Lisa'. Anyone remember that piece of work. Its funny, Macs are faster and the OS is more stable, but they marketed the wrong thing in the mid-80's and have never recovered. As soon as Mac realizes that it is a software, not a hardware company they will start to do well again. I have no patience for stupid people!! Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Oh god, don't get me started on the Lisa... It is/ was a nifty machine, but like most pre-Jobs Apple products, it was waaaay ahead of its time. Just like the Newton (remember that?), Apple's PDA. I've owned both the first (MessagePad 100) and last (MP2100) and they both beat the living shit out of any of Palm's or WinCE's offerings. Granted, they were both about twice as large as the competition (the MP2100 weighted almost a pound), but they kicked major ass. Ever see a WinCE palmtop running a true 3D flight-sim? The Newton did that and so much more. And though it might seem strange, as the Lisa was Jobs' brainchild, as soon as it showed just a teeny sign of failure, ol' Stevie jumped ship onto the Macintosh Project. And he stole a ton of the Lisa's design team people. That's why the Lisa's OS looks so much like the MacOS. It's a lot of the same ideas, but much better executed. And once he started working with the Mac folks, he took complete control of the project. So, yeah, he was responsible for the Lisa's failure, but as soon as he realized it was gonna fail, he was outta there faster than a speeding G4. And, as far as hardware goes, here's my feeling: If Apple were to ship software only (meaning porting the MacOS to Intel hardware), they would lose all that is Apple. Steve Jobs was quoted in the eighties saying "We make the whole widget." Sounds funny right? Well, it makes perfect sense. By having (nearly) complete control over every aspect of the Mac hardware and software, Apple's products retain their fame for reliability and quality. You never hear complaints like those of (for instance) Compaq customers, demanding rebates for faulty hardware. If Apple were to port the MacOS to Intel hardware, they would lose control of the hardware that their software was being run on, and general whiny-ness of the public would ensue. Of course, this assumes that Apple would port the current MacOS (MacOS 9). If Apple were to port OS X (pronounces Oh-ess Ten), that would be a whole 'nother story. OS X is based on Apple's version of UNIX, Darwin. Darwin, like most other UNIX variants, can compile on both Mac and PC hardware. So now, all it would need is for Apple to port the GUI and, perhaps, Apple returns to the top of the food chain like in the late 80's / early 90's. Questions? Comments? Complaints?
