O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I've been hearing good things about Linksys - theres a 4 port model thats being touted a lot lately, specifically this one It's gotten great reviews from what I've read, I was just wondering what all the OA.com techies prefer to use. (I linked to BB only for the router - I'm not planning on purchasing it from there) Classes for Enhancing your Board Experience and Stamina are now in Session! Hanger-On Registered: May. 01 | The network admin I work with has the same one HG is recommending, says that it works great. I think its about $90 bucks, pretty cheap for a good piece of hardware. As soon as I get another PC, that's the route I am going.

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I have heard a lot of bad things about the Linksys router for what its worth. I have heard a lot of good things about and I am using the SMC Barricade. Its 4 ports, built in firewall and the nice things is it has a printserver. You can connect 1 printer for all of the computers and it will handle it rather then forcing a PC to handle it. I believe it is about $150.00 and well worth the money. www.tomshardware.com has a lot of good hardware reviews. I have no patience for stupid people!! O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Practically Networked For anything and everything networked. They recommend the SMC Barricade 4 Port Router. Like Kwyjibo said, it has a built-in print server but lacks an uplink port. It can often be found on the web for $50 after mail-in rebate. Linksys has had firmware problems, but I haven't had any problems with it. Kiss Me I'm Duff! This message was edited by Spuds_Buckley on 8-7-01 @ 6:25 PM

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | The other thing you MAY want to consider depending upon your budget and your future expansionary needs - There's the SMC7004AWBR 4-Port Wireless Broadband Router which has three open ports (the fourth port goes to the cable modem). But the nice part about this is it does 802.11b WIRELESS networking if you wanted to do that sometime down the line - which is VERY cool if you have a laptop. You can post on opieanthony.com from anywhere in your house or apartment! You can grab that thing for about $200 and can find wireless cards for under $100 "Look how hot they're getting. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I'm seriously considering the Linksys or the SMC - apparently there is an issue with having Roadrunner as an ISP, something about the logon prompt. Thanks for all the sufggestions! I'll be hitting a huge comp show in Jersey next weekend, hopefully I'll be able to score one then. Take your laptop with you to the bathroom and blow your load into the can. No sock needed here! I went with a SOHO access point into my linksys router. the only shitty thing about the AP is that you need a soho wireless card to configure it (WEP, SSID and what not). O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I have the exact Linksys in HGW's first reply... haven't had a single problem with it. Runs like a champ. It has 4 ports plus "WAN" (i.e. cable modem) and "LAN" - LAN is to be used to hook to a hub, but be careful - don't hook up port #1 and the LAN port at the same time, because they are actually the same port. Still.... I've currently got 2 computers on it (sometimes 3 when I hook up my laptop) with Comcast @Home service and the fucker COOKS. They also have an 8-port model.... virtually the same in every way, except more ports... so if you're thinking of going with more computers and don't feel like using a hub, you can get that. Me droogies: None. Syndra has graduated and will one day take on droogs of her own. Two positions available. Come and get one in the yarbles.... if you have any yarbles.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I got the Netgear RT314 and it is a great router. I prefer it to the linksys since the Netgear has a metal case as opposed to the platic one of linksys. But whatever you could find cheapest always works. If you are feeling real expensive you could go totally wireless like Spork mentioned with a Linksys, D-Link, or Buffalo wireless router. But I wouldn't recommend that since they aren't that secure with information. Anybody can literally snatch the info out of the air if they wanted to. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: I'm either gonna go with the Linksys or the Netgear, though I'm really leaning towards the Netgear. Everyone I have mentioned it to said its a sweet router. As for purchasing one, the cheapest I see it going for is around $95 (per Pricewatch.com), and the netgear site itself has it going for $100.00. If you can find it cheaper, let me know - but to be honest, $100 really isn't that bad for my wallet. I'm gonna hold out until the comp show this weekend regardless, and see what kind of a deal I get there. If I didn't mention it, thanks to everyone's input on this - you guys really helped me out. I consider myself somewhat of a techie, but I am clueless when it comes to broadband and networking (gotta learn somehow). Silent Game has enrolled in summer school. Theres still one seat open! O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Thanks for the Outpost idea - I didn't eeven think of them, and I've had good experiences with them in the past. Right now, I've got bigger problems - my Mobo decided it wanted to sop working last night - long story short, Dell is sending out a techie this week to replace it. For whatever reason, after I tried to update IE% with SP2, it rebooted, but wouldn't go through the boot process - basically just sitting at the "press [DEL] to enter SETUP" screen - and even when I hit the DEL key, it just sits there. The tech guy was perplexed (as am I), and said maybe the board just died. And since I'm under warranty (hehe), a new board will be coming my way and installed free of charge this week. I'm still gonna pick up the router (hopefully) this weekend though. Silent Game has enrolled in summer school. Theres still one seat open! Email me here or AIM me at Organic999 to enroll.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | quote: Neither did I, but when I had questions about setting up permissions, they walked me through the entire process. I also have the Netgear PS110 Print Server which works awesome. Just a word on Linksys, if you decide to go that route, make sure you upgrade the firmware! It can easily be hacked into unless you do. They discussed this on "The Screen Savers" on Tech TV a few days ago. DasDoomper

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | Actually it looks like Buy.com will be your best bet for the Netgear R314 - they've got it for $97.95 (plus $7 shipping - Outpost.com only has free shipping on orders over $500 now). Couple of things to think about. If you spend over $150 at Buy.com (this offer expires August 31st) you can get $15 off if you follow this link: Visit this Website. Now obviously that means you need to spend a little more, but if you were looking for something else that was in the $50 range or so this should be a decent deal for you. Alternately, you could always go with the Linksys BEFSR41 which by most accounts is fairly comparable to the Netgear. Buy.com is offering that badboy for $99.95 BUT there is a $15 mail-in rebate. Sadly, e-tailer coupons aren't what they used to be, but I doubt you can pick up that gear too much cheaper anywhere else. I try to buy all my crap online - it's almost always cheaper (even bought my car online, so yes, I'm a bit of a freak in that regard) "Look how hot they're getting.
