| UPDATE ON WWF STORYLINE PLANS
by Dave Scherer Updated: 5/21/2001 11:05:08 AM
As Bob reported on the Newsline yesterday, there have been two schools of thought in the WWF recently in regards to what they should do at the top of their cards, in their top programs. One side felt, like many of us do, that it was time to try some new blood at the top and wanted to have Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho win the tag turmoil match at the PPV yesterday in order to put them into an elevating program with HHH and Steve Austin. The idea is that they would challenge for the tag titles (perhaps even winning them) and then have a program with Austin and HHH, either as a team or in singles, that would go on through King of the Ring. Paul Heyman is the man that numerous sources have told me is spearheading the push to elevate the two Chrisses.
On the other side, Vince McMahon is said to be behind a storyline that would continue the Austin vs. Undertaker feud through King of the Ring. With HHH losing to Kane last night, he could also continue that feud as well. As anyone with any sense knows, what Vince says goes in the WWF, but there are signs that he is at least considering changing his mind and going with the plan to elevate the Chrisses.
It was thought by many that I talked to that if this story got out before the PPV, there was a strong chance that the Chrisses would end up not going over in the tag match last night and that it could hurt their possible push up the ladder. Given that the wrestling business has had a history of killing perfectly good ideas, that make great business sense, just because they "got out" to a small portion of their fan base via the internet, I was very happy that I was not around much this weekend so that I was not put in the position of having to decide whether to break this story, or sit on it for the good of the Chrisses (and I feel, the business).
As I write this, I don't know which way the WWF will go. Tonight's Raw should set the direction for the company for the next month. Many in the company are saying that with July's "Invasion" PPV, the angle with WCW will start, and it could be entirely different from the original plan. Whatever the case though, tonight's Raw should lay a basic outline of what the company will do with itself until then. I hope that the WWF doesn't let the fact that the story got out keep them from doing the right thing.
-I think Vince is an asshole if he continues the Undertaker and Kane feuds.
