| Yo, Cutters.
You know, it’s funny. Like the Diamond Cutter, the masses truly never saw it comin’. Until I actually signed my deal, I never really saw it comin’ either. What an opportunity! What a spot! To come in from the WCW side as a true heel in the WWF is a dream come true. You’ve heard a lot about the supposed locker room myth of the WWF. Well, I am here to tell you it ain’t no myth. To come into an environment like this, where everyone works as a team, where the flow of positive energy is so invigorating, and to come from what I came from to this…it is mind-boggling. Since my first meeting with Shane and Vince McMahon, there has been a non-stop positive flow. A week later I went back up to Titan Towers to see the rest of the facility and to work out in the ring. I got to meet most of the staff and everyone’s attitude had a “I Love To Be Here, I Love My Job†attitude.
I also got into the ring with Al Snow. You have to understand that the WCW rings are 18 feet across. The WWF rings are 20 feet across. I know it only sounds like two feet, but when you start running those ropes, it feels like a football field. The ropes are higher which adds whole new areas to get hit when you are running the ropes and hitting spots. In the beginning, like most of the WWF…it’s overwhelming, but as time passes, you realize this is a much better way to do this. Since the ring is bigger, you have much more room to move and to work in. Like anything, it will take some time to get my timing to where I want it to be. Over the last few TVs, I’ve been getting into ring shape by running stairs and running the ropes. My partner in this is the soon-to-be in incredible (OK, maybe not incredible shape, but better shape) shape Big Show. Show was my running buddy in WCW, so we just picked up where we left off.
First night in Tampa, showing up in the spot I was in, back in front of 20,000 people again, I couldn’t have written a better script if I had wrote it for myself…but I didn’t. They did. Another huge thing…when I was working at Turner’s WCW, I was always wondering when told an idea how are they going to try to screw me on this one. I don’t even think about that anymore. I know in the WWF entertainment group, it’s all about drawing money and giving the talent the opportunity to get over. It is still up to the talent to make the most of that opportunity. Well, Monday night in Tampa couldn’t have gone any better. I couldn’t begin to tell you all the preparation that goes into this show. To me, like so many things here it is mind-boggling. To watch a guy like Steve Austin prepare for his spot hours before the show gives you a new appreciation for his work.
Which brings us to King Of The Ring…remember when I told you about getting a lot of stuff dumped on you. Well, a lot got dumped on me…and I loved it. Coming home to New Jersey and being in the Meadowlands. This actually is a dream come true. In the opening promo and then sitting out there with all the Jersey and New York fans. It was a fun experience, but at the same time I am the king of yoga…what I mean by that is I normally stretch for an hour or two before I do anything in the ring. Well, there wasn’t much stretching going on before Taker and I got into it. He doesn’t know it, but I kicked the hell out of him…with my face on his hands. After taking the boot to the face and hightailing it out of there, I think some of the fans were in shock, including Rich who has never seen me run away from a fight…on screen or off. It got the exact reaction I wanted. People were screaming and calling me names for running away and telling me that I suck. Just what I wanted because I am really going to get to be the bad guy…so I AM BEGGING YA…treat me like that. This is the evil side of DDP and it must be booed, not cheered….get it? I’m going to have fun the whole way through.
At Raw, Mike Awesome was the first WCW guy to step foot in the backstage ramps, but Diamond Dallas Page was the first WCW superstar to ever step inside the Garden…Good Gawd! Everyone thought DDP turned tail and ran…yeah, that day…but not the next day. When I jacked Taker with the chair, Sara came across like a champ. That girl has some serious fire. When she bowed up at me, all I could think of was the scene from True Romance where Patricia Arquette was getting the hell beat out of her by an unknown wise guy who would later become Tony Soprano, James Gandolfini. At some point, Arquette fires back and punches Gandolfini in the face, which only brings a smile. His reply, “Oh so you want to play, huh…let’s play.†And the sh*t was on. I know it looked a little vicious with Sara, but I only ripped a little hair out. LOL. If you haven’t seen True Romance, go rent it…you won’t be disappointed.
Well, the Invasion is on. Booker T against Stone Cold and DDP against the UnderTaker. Shane O’Mac versus Vince MacMahon. Like you, I can’t wait to see what happens. As for Smackdown…well, you won’t want to miss it.
Oh…one last thought, if you haven’t seen Tough Enough, which airs right after Smackdown on MTV…it is a must see. I watched it last Thursday and I thought it was unreal. When I turned it on, Kim said, “What’s this? I don’t want to watch this.†I told her to give it a chance and if she didn’t like it I would catch it on another TV. I really wanted to see what she thought of it. Twenty minutes later, I asked her what she thought. Her reply, “ I LOVE IT!†Don’t miss Tough Enough, this week after Smackdown. God, I love this company.
As usual, it's been your pleasure...
