So he laughed Tuesday when plate umpire Angel Hernandez made him the first seventh-inning-stretch singer to be thumbed out of a Cubs game. McMichael created the stir before singing ''Take Me Out to the Ball Game.'' He told the fans he would have to have a talk with Hernandez, who had called Ron Coomer out at the plate in the sixth on what TV replays showed was the wrong call. Colorado Rockies pitcher Denny Neagle's sweep tag looked late, and the Cubs already had bickered with Hernandez about his strike-zone judgment. The 40,266 fans already were harping on him. When McMichael mentioned over the public-address system that he would talk with Hernandez afterward, Hernandez turned around with his hands on his hips and glared at McMichael as he sang. Hernandez gave McMichael the ejection sign, but no security guards came to the press-box area to escort him out of Wrigley Field. ''You know there's no security guard man enough to come and get me,'' McMichael said jokingly. Asked on TV what he had said, McMichael replied: ''How did I put it? I said, 'Chicago fans, don't worry about that play at home plate. Mongo will have a speech with him after the game.''' McMichael joked about the way Hernandez reacted, walking around upset and toweling off his face. ''I just said I'd talk to him, and did you see him down there?'' McMichael said. ''He got all sensitive and [stuff]. You can't be insecure and be a home-plate umpire.'' This is what he does without Rena.
