In an attempt to get of the David Morrell book theme I’ve been on of late I thought I would actually make an effort to talk about wrestling. A lot of people have asked me how working for the World Wrestling Federation is different from working for World Championship Wrestling. There are of course a lot of little differences but there are a few big ones as well. I figured this week I could address a few of the bigger ones.

First and foremost the road schedule is much more grueling. Having to work 4 days a week as apposed to 2 is a big adjustment. I am now away more than I am home, which is taking its toll on both my family and me. With the extra days on the road I find I am now more tired and sore when I get home and have far less time to recuperate. If it weren’t for my ability to sleep well on planes I would be burned out from exhaustion and fatigue before the year is out. With any luck at all my body will just get used to a greater level of fatigue and before long I won’t even notice how tired and sore I am. You would be surprised what your body can get used to when it has to. My first day of camp I didn’t think I would ever get used to taking bumps and now if I go too long without taking any my body aches.

My recognition factor has also gone through the roof, although as I write this, sitting on a plane to Newark, the girl sitting beside me, Mandy, asked if I was a writer. I guess I’m not completely famous yet. Anyway, Mandy aside, I do get recognized way more now that I am on WWF television. I can’t go through an airport without being asked for an autograph and even people who I’ve been dealing with for years are now realizing what I do for a living (park and jet attendants, guys at my gym, etc.) You need not worry that this increased recognition will go to my head as, no matter how many times I get recognized the first thing I always get asked is do I know The Rock, or Stone Cold Steve Austin, now those two guy are truly famous.

People always talk about the power of WWF television but you don’t fully grasp it until you’ve experience it first hand. I can actually see that there will be a point when I avoid leaving my house just to avoid getting recognized and approached for autographs. My biggest fear is that I will have to stop going to The Gym, in Calgary, because too many people are interrupting my workouts. The owner of The Gym, makes a great effort to try and keep people from bothering me when I train but in time his efforts may prove futile. I know Bret got so big in Calgary that he couldn’t go anywhere without getting mob. I doubt I will ever achieve his level of fame in Calgary but the possibility of even getting close concerns me.

The biggest plus to working for the WWF is the working environment. In WCW there was no pressure to perform and with that no motivation to improve. The only drive I had was pride in my own performance, which was enough to keep me working hard but not conducive to real growth and improvement. In the WWF my work is under a microscope and there are a ton of very experienced knowledgeable people watching and offering me their advice. Everyone is so passionate about the product that you can’t help but to learn and improve. When you do things well there are a line of guys waiting to congratulate you for it, and when you do things wrong, and we all do, they are there to offer advice not criticism.

Vince McMahon himself has met me at the “go position” to offer both praise and constructive criticism. Getting instant feedback from the boss himself really makes you feel like what you do matters and is important. With a constant unified direction and being surrounded by passionate people one can’t help but to improve. I honestly believe that in my work rate and character should improve 10 fold over the next year. It will be a lot of work but I am very excited as to where my skill level and character could end up.

Wow, 4 days on the road a week, that is enough to make anyone stay a fan rather than dream of being a wrestler!!! Very well written for a canuck! lol
